VZW's Skype Application available March 25th.

maybe i'm missing something

I just tried this app - had a friend call me from his pc - i received an incoming call with a 401-xxxxxxx number , no way to tell who is calling, or even that it is a skype call.

Also, when i tried calling from my phone to my friend on his pc, my phone was dialing the same 401-xxxxx number, cutting me out of 3g as it does so.

Isn't this exactly the same as we had with skype-lite or skype-beta or what ever the name was a few months ago, where all calls were just routed through some number? Where is the VOIP here?

i know so far i see if i get a call its coming from one number and if i call out its going to another number. but does this mean i am now getting more m 2 m numbers to cover all skype calls. i know i for one will be testing this just to see how the billing is going to work. i like this idea of this.i think there should be a new line on the billing to say how many mins are for skype calling. so some one could keep better track.

Dont think they would ever give you the mins used by skype directly, i think the only way to truely see it would be to look on the bill for those 404 or 401 numbers that come up with someone calls you or when you call someone else, they wont ever tell you flat out because than you may actually watch your limit, this skype stuff if people dont read the T.O.S. can really screw with people and their plans/payments, i for one will not be using the app unless im calling another skype user on the computer which wont happen alot if at all. i'll continue using my gizmo5/sipdroid/and google voice when i want to make free phone calls :)

This is the same thing for me. Can't tell who is calling. I called a buddy on his iphone via skype and it worked OK. Call quality was decent. Goofy thing is he has to be on wifi and I can't be on wifi. Since I am on wifi 90% of the time, this is pretty useless.

This was just a plot to get y'all to get the unlimited data plan. Clearly. You thought Verizon wasn't going to have a catch? Lets be serious here...

Seems like another service crippled beyond believe by a bunch of executives trying to squeeze a few more cents out of people. Nice.

Downloaded, installed and signed in. Doesn't work with Wi-fi, useless.

We have unlimited data plans with the Droid so calling other Skype users uses data, not minutes. I find it very useful as I have many contacts on Skype.

How do you see that you are using data and not voice? When i place a call to another skype user, my phone dials a number - this is clearly a voice call. Maybe vzw has some magic accounting that will not count those calls towards your monthly allowance, but it is still a voice call from the phone.

The details have been talked about on several web sites for the last few days, like here on driodlife. Skype to Skype calls use Verizon's 3G network and are free under your unlimited data plan. Skype to land line or mobile phone calls go over Verizon's voice network and use your plan minutes and, I believe, also your Skype credit.

The fact that it can't be used over wifi was stated in Verizon's original announcement in mid February, so I don't know why that's a surprise for everybody.
