VZW's Skype Application available March 25th.

Just spent a few minutes messing around with it... not bad.. just another way to make free calls with people who ain't on the network... noticed one thing though... I'm overclocking at 1.2ghz on DroidMod and this sucker gets hot and eats battery like crazy while in use... also if left running in the background , like right now , and I'm in the browser typing a forum post it's running at almost 130f... I'll try clocking back to 800mhz and see how that goes.

I Am totally not a fan of this application. The little pre-video of it that they released said that you could use it to make free calls, and it was gonna use Wi-Fi.

I don't like how it turns your Wi-Fi off. and it does the EXACT same thing as Google Voice does. Which I like a lot better.

Oye. Big Red, will you get ANYTHING else right.

tell me why I would use skype when I have google voice?

You would use it if you are running low on minutes for your calling plan to make free calls with Skype to Skype calling (assuming the people that you would call have Skype too). Also, if you want to call someone abroad that has Skype on their pc or mobile phone for free, it is very useful. You would have to buy credits with Google Voice to make international calls, same with Skype, except Skype has the option of free Skype to Skype calling if you are in the US and you want to call someone from a different country.

Anyway, I downloaded and installed it too. I tested it calling someone from Italy and it was very clear (Skype to Skype calling). The only thing that I'm disappointed about this is that it does turn of wi-fi on the Droid and uses Verizon's network only to make calls. So I guess we can't use this particular app when we are abroad or out of the country. I'll just probably use Nimbuzz or some other app that can use wi-fi to make Skype to Skype calling.

Well it's working for me now, weird i don't get why they wouldn't allow Skype over wifi??

I'm guessing because IF we go abroad (for a vacation or something), Verizon won't make money on roaming charges if we decide to use Skype with wi-fi. I hope they do change it though.

Whole point of this app is to get you to go over minutes.

Mobile to mobile on VZ are free, but in the future it will be apps like this, voice may not matter as much to people, and by throwing this up, and forcing you to use the 3G, they eventually will start billing you for it, watch and see.

I love saying it was optimized for 2.1, which is why it isn't working great at moment.

Just kidding.

Makes sense still sucks though :\ it's not like we can get wifi everywhere while abroad though. I really hope they change it.

Yeah bro, if you are abroad and still want to make a Skype to Skype call over wi-fi, just use the other apps in the market that have Skype also. You can make a free Skype to Skype call that way until they change it, hopefully.

I still have to test how this app does making calls to an actual phone to someone abroad. I would need to buy some Skype credits though. It should be clear also making a call to a phone to someone here in the US. I've been using Google Voice lately to make international calls because their rates are the lowest (even lower than Skype's rates for international calling).

mine force closes as soon as I try and open it? Anyone else having this problem? I wondered if it might be a problem with cyanogen mod or maybe its a 2.1 issue.

love it.. instant messaging works great..

one Q. will this kill your battery if left running?
Possibly. I left Sketch Online running for 3 hours in the background once at around 60%, checked back and my phone was at 15% battery
