What's your favorite metal band?

Something I discovered recently

I'll take "What if Dir En Grey, Asking Alexandria and No One had a threesome baby" for $1000, Alex. Or maybe Sigh and Mindless Self Indulgence?

Ah, and I forgot to post Machine Head above. Hadn't listened to them much before but I've managed to hear a lot of them on Liquid Metal here lately and have yet to hear a bad song by them.

On the flip side, guys can't shouldn't try to sing like girls.

As I said before, I appreciate growling, but at the same time I like something different. Hearing a pure operatic voice where you usually hear growling is interesting to me. Its the dichotomy that I like. Many of the bands that use female vocalists also have male vocalists that do growling (again, listen to Epica's Cry for the Moon). I've heard this style described as Beauty and the Beast, and I can't argue with that.

Some bands use male vocalists whose voices are a bit cleaner, but still more in line with what you expect from rock/metal. Listen to Nightwish's cover of Phantom of the Opera. Or a band called Delain, but I can't think of, offhand, a particular song.

Generally speaking though, I like bands that can mix it up. Like 5FDP has clean vocals as well. Or a band that I heard when they opened for Epica, and I've since become a fan of...Scar Symmetry.

The Agonist, featuring a female growler, also opened for Epica. Though I listened to them a bit on youtube, I didn't like it much. However, I was much more impressed with them live.

Just to dredge your post up from the pit, the main problem I have with most bands that have a female lead is that the bands themselves suck. When you actually sit back and listen to the music backing the vocals it's nine times out of ten powerchorded, palm-muted generic garbage. And when the singer goes off the deep-end with her writing, i.e. In This Moment's crap-fest that was "The Dream," I'd rather listen to some freaking Warrant or Motley Crue before being subjected to that again. Very few bands seemed to be female-fronted with a true set of musicians rounding out the picture rather than a joke that will get play on Octane three times a day.

Do have to say from personal experience the singer from Agonist is a pretty cool chick.

I'll agree that perhaps some (most) female fronted bands are relying on the singer being hot.

But the bands that bring musicianship to the show as well, are great. Again, look at Nightwish and Epica. Now that I think about it, the female fronted bands I listen to is a pretty short list. Within Temptation and Delain being two more that I can think of right now, nothing else is coming to mind.

I've been digging Blackmore's Night lately, but that's far from metal, despite Ritchie Blackmore.

I'm kinda excited, my top three bands have albums coming out soon, Metallica, Five Finger Death Punch and (a bit further away, they're recording now), Epica.

love a7x's newer stuff (I like singing and harmony, not screaming... :)) - Nightmare is one of my favorite metal songs ever... Portnoy was a great replacement on the drums for the album...

despite their ups and downs, and whether or not you think they "sold out", Metallica is still my all time favorite...
