Will the Droid ever match IPhone's...

Give it some time. Motorola and Verizon both are not in the HUGE promotional business. Apple thrives on that and they are very good at what they do. In due time the Droid should have the same accessories out. PLUS we will beable to get an extended battery hopefully. Too bad the iphone cant do that :)
GOTCHA' iphone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the greater question is...

Why Does The DROID need to match the number of accessories of Apple's offering?

As a previous iPhone user, I found the vast majority of iPhone accessories to be nonsensical, redundant, or just stupid.

The DROID needn't fall into the trap of relying on silly/proprietary gadgets that add little functionality and lot's of bulk/inconvenience.

A nice selection of protective cases, a few docking untis, and that's about all that's required - IMO

As I mentioned in the OP, I only mentioned the sheer volume of Accessories just to juxtapose it against the the scarcity of the Droid stuff.

Nobody wants a Droid accessory that allows a mechanical dog to play music and videos. Just want some cool and useful options (see; awesome speaker doc)

I agree with you. Quantity does not equal quality. There are 375 apps for farts!

Apparently the Droid needs an app the reads the original posts for Droid Forums users prior to posting. :)

FYI... Apple's connector is highly proprietary. Just try to get one to create an accessory and you will find out just how proprietary it is. They own the connector. The micro-USB is, arguably, a standard connector. Of course, all of this is academic in that, proprietary or not, Apple has a terrific machine working for a few years allowing the proliferation of many accessories. Hopefully, the Moto Droid will get there some day. I'm an ABA guy (anything-but-Apple).

Oh yeah, I know the Apple iPod/iPhone connector is proprietary. Probably more than any other company. But it's the fact that their proprietary connector is uniform throughout the entire history of the iPod and the iPhone. That year's worth of products and customers that they've gathered and kept by not changing the connector. So someone can purchase a speaker dock to work with their iPhone 3GS as well as their iPod 2G.

If cell manufacturers would attempt this uniformity, then manufacturers would be more likely to design products for other cell phones. But all cell phone companies are different. Look at Motorola. Have they even made two cell phones within the same company that have the same footprint? Maybe the same connector, but not the same footprint.

This is exactly right and why we will never see a large selection of items for any phone until it's fixed. there is no uniformity of hardware/design. It doesn't make sense for a company to dump much money into an accessory that is only good for one phone.

Great points. I did not think much about these aspects of business. Good info. Makes sense.

BTW, I STILL WANT AN AWESOME HOME?WORK SPEAKER DOC hahaha.

Motorola makes phones, and phone accessories.

Apple makes phones, PCs, walkmen, and other products that fill multiple niches.
All are capable of handling multimedia, so there is a lot of cross-platform synergies that can be capitalized upon.

Article seems to be trying too hard to create controversy.

Google checkout not intuitive? It just like any other credit card ecommerce system, you click buy, give it the credit card number and that's that. Whether it's widely used or not makes no difference (it's the credit cards that are widely used which matters).

Different screen sizes is another silly point - do they really think iPhone/iPod is not going to increase screen size? And since apps didn't have to take different resolutions into account from the beginning the change will be a big deal (mark my words:-)

I think that part of the problem with the lack of cases is the design of the phone...and slider phones in general. There just isn't a whole lot for the case to grip onto the front, and its very difficult to execute a slider case well.

Certain case manufactures, such as otterbox, will probably never have a Droid case for this very reason.

I guess its one of the tradeoffs for making the phone a slider.

Another good point.

I think its not just the marketing that is playing the role, its the products and the actual user demand. whether they are molding towards the iPhone touch and friendlessness with iphone still lacking basic features including Bluetooth data transfer.

On the other hand Android is a platform so according to the following question.

So what do you think? Is it just a matter of time? Or is it something different all together?

I think its something all together different. but i think, in comparison of iphone with android, iphone still have a lot of changes ot over take android based phones because there are a lot of apple iphone accessories made by apple which takes the usability of the gadget to the next level.

For example: lets consider a simple ipad with touch screen keyboard, if you use an external ipad keyboad it will give an experience of using mac book.

For as much as I disliked the ipod compared to other players, this is one of the reason I ended up buying one. There are just so many third party (and overprice apple branded) ipod accessories out there for pretty much any of your needs. The various Sansa's and the Creative Zen I used have a fraction of these.

Manufacturers will go where the money is. Everyone and their mom has an ipod nowadays, so manufacturers focus on those accessories.

Another thing is the fragmentation of android hardware and software. There is only one current iphone/ipod/etc. Sure they come out with new ones every year, but there is still only one product line, and that makes product development easier. Android is the complete opposite, with tons of different phones and different OS versions.

I dont know about all of you but I have a pretty decent case for my Droid. I am angry at how cheap the ones from Verizon are. I got a regular one and my friend got the high end one, both of them fell apart. The nice looking back started to peel off, come to find out it was glued on. I expect better from Verizon. Honestly theres no excuse for that mess. I got a much better case from a kiosk in the mall for just about the same price.

Now the other accessories, Ill be honest. I couldnt care less. I wouldnt mind something like a speaker / alarm dock that charges the phone but thats it. Anything else is too much IMHO. And even that speaker costs too much. I was going to get one for my iPod or iTouch and the store wanted $130 for it. What in the World was that mess?
