Your Droid Physical Keyboard

I read through most of this thread, and no one said they even bothered to contact Motorola to ask THEM. So I did, and will post up if I hear anything why some got raised and others got flat keyboards. This should be a simple question for them to answer, I even provided them with a link to here.

my keyboard is flat, but each key is slightly raised
i dont think its from heat though because my CPU runs at barely 98.6F peak, 104F tops, and gets as low as 80.6F @1.25Ghz

It is white under the keys, because that is the actual keyboard membrane. The keyboard membrane is flexible piece of material that prevents dust and moisture from getting to the the electronics underneath. Under the membrane, attached to the board, you will probably find small metal discs called Popples. These popples, when pressed, make contact with a couple of traces printed on the board completing a circuit, to send a signal to the processor, that you have pressed a key.

thanks looks like the people with the flat keyboard are lucky for now

Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

the milestone is the same right?

My first Droid had a completley flat keypad. None of this "heat raises the keys nonsense". I ended up exchanging it within the 30 days return policy due to a horribly bright green stuck pixel. The Droid I got as a replacement has a raised keypad with a different texture / feel to the keys. There are two markedly different keypads floating around.

Edit: Just as a side note for all you flat-keypaded droid owners: I type about the same accuracy on the raised version. I don't think one is better than the other. I've always prefered the physical keyboard to any of the virtural keybard alternatives (sype, default, better keyboard, etc.. I've tried them all).

This is what motorloa told me in an email I received today:

Dear Mark,

Thanks for reaching out to Motorola. I’ve reviewed your e-mail and I’m ready to help.

We apologize for the confusion.

The Droid was originally designed to have a flat keyboard. The new ones that has come out were of a limited number and Engineering Samples to check how consumers may be responding to a raised keypad on the Droid. This can be a future project for the Android. One of its "evolution".

We hope that you find this information useful and look forward to assisting you in the future.

Thank you for contacting Motorola e-mail support.

Best Regards,

DAVE

As is typical from Motorola, they didn't really provide you with much, and the web site that they gave you is very light. It's mostly just marketing, even on their "Support" pages.

So it's completely random as to what keyboard you get? Cause if there is anyway I can get the newer model with the raised keyboard, that's be awesome.

I got this same problem, I am on my second refurbished phone and the keys are getting harder and harder to press yet again. How do I prevent this?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's not the keys that raise up, but likely easy key is on a "center post", and as you continue to use it, the edges of each individual key will get mashed down, so the center appears/feels "raised", while the corners get pushed down.

but all the keys are raised equally you have to have pressed all the keys the same amount for your theory to be correct
