One way that the update was distributed last time was (if I remember correctly)...
Once you get the update notification, tell it to do it. When your phone restarts, pull the battery. Then take the SD card out and copy the update.zip file from it to your computer (you'll need a card reader that can read the SD card). Then, put the card back in and go into recovery mode and apply the update.
But, then you'll have the update.zip file on your computer that can be shared with everyone else.
Now, since the update.zip is capable of modifying the baseband, while it seems a nandroid cannot, I wonder if the update can be modified to only do the baseband without changing the ROM one is running....
