Apparent GPS Failure

I say they're unwilling to do this because of the number of people having this problem would end up saturating their Verizon towers, not that there aren't enough of us to bother with a fix.

as i've said countless times before
IF THIS PROBLEM WERE HAPPENING IN NYC.... IT WOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN FIXED
SO....
i fully agree with you
obviously verizon doesn't give a damn about a single ex-alltel customer, even though:
1. i'm paying the same amount TO VERIZON every month as any old verizon customer
2. i'm paying verizon thousands more/month for my T1, etc... for my business

I don't think it's Verizon. Everything else seems to work ok. Probably a problem with Googles mobile map servers ... It will probably resolve itself soon enough. However, this just adds to the issue of unreliability for this platform. There have been a number of media articles discussing how the Droid is going to threaten the GPS market (Garmin, Tom Tom, etc). With issues like these, I'd say their market share is pretty safe.

i'm not trying to be rude
but, i really don't think you've read THE WHOLE THREAD
it's the inability of alltel towers to let your droid SEE agps data
so.....
there is no gps on alltel-number-based phones..... who's PRLs MAKE the phone use alltel towers FIRST

this is NOT a google map issue
I was refering to today's system wide outage, not the original thread discussion. I've read every post thoroughly and have a complete understanding of the issue.

Just popping in--still here.

What's interesting is I hacked my old Alltel PPC6800 to use GPs assist ON ALLTEL TOWERS. This means there is DEFINITELY a way to do this...

hmmmmmmmmmm, jerry
the plot thickens
i've always felt that there was a relatively easy way to do this
i'm just not sure verizon is TRULY "working" on it

No gps

Just dropping a note to say I have the same problem. Got my Droid from Dell, I have been trying for a week, to no avail. My fix is about a mile off of my position. Right now N and S aren't even right! I hope they fix this soon. I also have a former alltel number from Virginia/NC. I wonder if getting a new number in FL would help?

in the end, i guess that verizon was happy to acquire alltel and have us commit to new 2-year contracts with verzon.....
but, still treat us like forgotten orphans when it comes to gps use

thanks for your post
thanks for joining the forum

once again....
that verizon has not made a public statement about this is just HORRIBLE
they know there is a problem
they might..... or might NOT be working on it
just tell us
period

Hi guys,

Several of us have been discussing issues with former Alltel accounts/numbers and the Droid over at Androidforums.

I'm ex-Alltel as well, have the Alltel PRL (30050) etc, yet my GPS does work fine here in Arizona as far as I've seen. I'm positive I'm on Alltel towers - my network shows up as "Unknown", no Verizon network name on the lock screen, my roommate's "real" VZW phone has a better signal than mine etc...

I don't understand either why it needs to use the towers for GPS - isn't aGPS just a way to accelerate satellite lock times? I mean what should a cell tower ultimately have to do with the Droid's ability to lock satellites in the sky that should be visible from anywhere in the world with a clear view?

The only thing that makes any sense to me is in light of my previous phone, an ALLTEL HTC Touch Pro. It, also, had built-in GPS but ALLTEL diddled with the programming, so unless I paid for and started the ALLTEL navigation program, the proper GPS drivers would not load and my Touch Pro would do exactly what my Droid does now in the Tampa to Ft. Myers area; namely search and search but never find the sats.

That being said, clearly the Droid has not been fiddled with by Verizon so the drivers are not the issue as it works just fine outside of the Tampa to Ft. Myers area.

Perhaps the ALLTEL towers are programmed to send false aGPS data to non-GPS-paying phone numbers and VZW hasn't reprogrammed them yet? That would make sense to me since the chip would be looking in places where the sats were not.

I'd still really like a Verizon tech (who knows his rectal orifice from his elbow [meaning for a start that they don't work in a VZW store]) to explain what the heck is actually going on, what steps Verizon is taking to rectify the situation and give us a proper estimation for the fix. :icon_evil:

I was the 2nd person on this thread and have been watching the GPS problem evolve. I also was an alltel customer and have the same problem. live in Ft. myers. The people at the store assured me that the GPS will be fixed with the DEC 11 update and that I am going to get another 30 days to return the phone if it is not fixed. Sounds fair, but I don't want another phone, I just want this one to work.

They have begun releasing the OTA update a few days earlier than originally listed. My phone updated yesterday and I am currently running Android firmware 2.0.1 and my GPS issues continue unimproved.
