Apparent GPS Failure

I only wish my Droid GPS would work in the airplane I fly. Once past 180 knots or so, the map won't keep up and dissapears. Understandable in such a small unit, otherwise am very happy with the Droid. I mention this only incase someone knows a way to get the Droid GPS to work at high speeds.

That's because the phone can't download the map imagery fast enough to keep up. There is no pre-loaded maps in the Droid, all imagery is downloaded in real time. If you were to zoom way out, it might have a chance, but if you're flying a turboprop or jet, I doubt it's going to keep up.

Well, we cant get our droids to work at slow speeds.

Here is my latest status:
* former Alltel customer in Tampa Bay area
* Completely changed to a VZW phone number & plan when I bought the Droid to avoid these problems. Of course that didn't work.
* Have connected some times in Pinellas County, mostly it times out, even in the same place it has connected previously.
* Just got back from Washington DC, traveled by car. GPS worked flawlessly the whole trip, connected to satellites within 5-10 seconds every time. Have not been able to connect since getting back to Tampa on Thursday.
* Working with a VZW regional supervisor to get this issue resolved, or at least get my number removed off of the legacy Alltel network. She states that they have a Senior System Performance Engineer from VZW working on this and also working with Motorola.
* I'll let you guys know when I have an update.

i'm happy for your post
but... more UNthrilled than ever with this issue
on monday... i'll finally be removed from that LEGACY ALLTEL list, as well
i was hoping everything would finally be ok
now.... after reading your post.... i doubt it will

thanks...
i just wish that verizon would put its BEST people on THIS problem.... i STILL imagine it's fairly simply to fix

does your gps still work after the update and what is your prl # now

verizon won't have all my paperwork approved until monday morning
hopefully, by lunchtime (EST), i'll have my phone updated to a verizon plan
same phone number
with a "look for verizon towers first" PRL
then... i'll see if my gps will work

it's beginning to sound like a TAMPA BAY AREA PROBLEM ONLY
wonderful

I am on the phone now with verizon getting a hybrid prl,I will let you know if this works.
Clearwater,FL also

awesome
let me know
my business rep had to submit paperwork to corporate to get my alltel phone changed into a verizon one... for whatever reason
it'll be approved on monday morning
then.... he'll update the computer to show that MY ESN corresponds to a VERIZON DROID

crazy
if you get this done over the weekend..... and, it works....
i'll be thrilled

glad you are here
thanks for your continued posts

No gps navigation for me and the wife in Ft. Myers.
Former alltell customers switched to verizon plan at time of sale.
Both droids will not find satellites. Wife exchanged her phone for new one 1 week ago for other issues. None of the phones we have had will find satellites. I have been following thread and waiting for the dec 11 update in hopes that the problem will be solved. NO luck yet still waiting.

So I was told today by Verizon that there may be another update from Motorola about the first of the year as they know about the GPS issue and it is not the phone.
My phone and everything else works great.

so.....
why would motorola have another update soon... and mention the gps problem in the same sentence
motorola can't do anything to fix this gps problem....
it's 100% VERIZON'S FAULT

no firmware update will EVER fix this gps problem
it has NOTHING to do with the motorola or the phone, itself

verizon had BETTER find some way to allow phones they sold to alltel refugees to use the agps data only on verizon towers soon... or risk a horrible PR disaster that upon which apple will FEAST

i agree, this seems to be verizon related not motorola. What is scary is verizon seems to be pushing this off to motorola which means a solution is getting farther away. i really believe bad PR is our only hope of not getting left behind. That is why i keep posting here and will tell anyone i can about this problem.Hopefully it will become enough of an embarrassment something will get done.Shame is a powerful tool
