Battery sucks after update

First off...let may say I was not getting on any first time posters...we are all there at one time. Just the part about not wanting any people not having the issue to post threw me. This being said...I dont keep my brightness at max, but near max. My screen is still always my #1 battery eater and then throw in some Wifi, Phone idle (usually up there as well) and the android os. Right now my display says it is the cause of 42% of my battery usage. This being said...no doubt I am getting an increase of at least 20% and probably more. I will say that I made a post a week or so ago because my battery was draining extremely fast. I deleted a bunch of apps and did a battery pull and have never had the issue again. Hind site would say I should have done the battery pull first and check but oh well. I still believe it was one of the 15 apps I deleted that was doing the damage.

The update has DRASTICALLY improved my battery life. I thought it was bad at first, but last night I decided to fully drain then charge. Today I took my phone off the dock at 930am. I'm at 14 hours right now, and battery widget says 70%. 70!! Completely awesome. Only moderate use today, but enough to know that pre update I would be around 40% right now. For those of you having issues, try a full drain.

I just wanted to report that since the update on Friday I was able to go a full day, two hours and thirty seven minutes from the last plug in with light to moderate use.

A quite noticeable increase in battery life for me.

Ok... Guys...

Instead of just reporting 'Battery sucks after update'... Do what I stated before in this thread... LIST YOUR APPS

So far, the common denominator is Weatherbug or Beautiful Widget Apps or Meebo or some IM program.

Please take the time to read what I posted.

Weatherbug, some Beautiful Widget Apps, IM programs that are left RUNNING, that will constantly poll the system or the internet. This counts as phone talk time. The more apps doing this, the more likely your battery time will be leaking like a sieve.

Even if you have the phone on 'standby'... These apps running still burn battery time because they are constantly pinging on the wireless for updates. Even with a longer polling time, this still pings the wireless radio enough to cause a drain on the system.

I have observed this with the Battery Widget when I have it doing a polling update versus just when the battery registers a change.

If you insist on posting having battery is worst without stating what apps you have on your phone... There is NOTHING that can be done, because there is not enough information and it is simply NOT just due to the update.

At worst, the update has only made certain programs more noticeable as far as power burning.

I was a G1 user before. Actually, DROID's battery can last two times longer than G1.

Here are some suggestions to save your battery.

1. Turn off background data and sync (some apps uses it crazy).
2. Turn off GPS, WIFI, Bluetooth.

By the way, check your local 3G signal. A weak or instable 3G signal can drain the battery. “Spare parts” from market helps identifying where the battery goes.

Unless you have bad 3G signal, I believe that DROID battery could be greatly improved.

Good luck!

This is a good recommendation as well... Check your signal strength. I know in my area, it seems to bounce between 2 to 3 bars for home and 3 to 4 at work. Weak Signal strength will also require the phone to 'push harder' for data to make sure it has a good connection for data.

I will have to say I have as well. As well as many other random bugs and issues. Like my search widget going berserk, uh my messaging app constantly going back to the most recent message while I'm trying to read older messages, more lag in the message scroll, and a much slower android market.

Lets be honest for a second...if you didn't download any apps or any games and then did the update, your battery is not going to be lessened for no apparent reason. There is no magic working behind the scenes.

Hypochondriac'ism or simply delusional? :)

hey I know its called a bug. People screw up even the glorious programmers. Even the ones at Google. They are not exempt from making mistakes. And all I know is my device has gone to SH** even after wiping it and doing a factory reset. I would also love to know why they changed the lock screen from something so cool to the retarded bars...

Ok, once again, I went to bed with a full charge and when I woke up this morning 7.5 hours later, I still had 90% charge left. There was definitely a glitch that caused the display to drain the battery even though the screen was off.

Please note... I am not asking people to 'STFU', what I am asking is people to do more than just say, "My battery life is worse after the update.".

In all honesty... The only time an update makes things worse for most computers is if:

  1. The hardware is not the same
  2. Installed Software introduces an unintended side effect.
The hardware, for the most part is not the variable at this time, short of a bad battery, so the only other thing that comes into play is the software.

Ripley - In the Verizon Rep thread, I responded to your post with the following answer:

Given you have your battery usage showing 90% of your battery being used by your battery, this suggests you have something keeping your screen on. The possibility is not the update, but environment or some app. If you are using it near a magnet or tricking by accident to keep it in 'display mode' it will burn the battery because nothing should be forcing your screen to be using the battery at 90%

For the rest - I have posted in the FAQ about this... I highly encourage you to take the steps I posted, because I feel that the issues a lot of you are having may be application/widget related and without posting what apps/widgets you have installed, it is very easy to dismiss your issues if you can't tell us what is on the droid and it can be as simple as needing to adjust to your habits.

I'm at 1 day 3 hours 9 minutes since my last unplug, and battery widget says 50%. I'd say my battery life is officially improved.

Never completely drain the battery to nothing. It's good to drain it close and recharge, but draining it completely will result in a shorter battery lifetime (overall, not just charge)....

If you are saying not to get too close to total drain so as to avoid a single cell reversing polarity and ruining a pack, I agree. If you are alluding to battery conditioning - that does not apply to Lithium Ion batteries. Not sure if you were, but a lot of folks keep citing battery conditioning and battery memory but those issues only applied to early Nicads.
