[Breaking]Verizon Plans to Slow Downloads of High Data Users Because of iPhone Launch

So, if ~50% of all smartphone users on Verizon are throttled as the numbers indicate they will be, how many of you guys will jump ship??

I average between 4 - 6Gb per month since I have an unlimited data plan & I want to get my dollars worth. Unlimited means unlimited. Throttling Bandwidth Hogs? What th f Verizon. Like a dealer getting everyone hooked on th good stuff then inoventually selling swag. Change is coming. Mine has had more operational issues in th past weeks then th first 10 months. I knew Verizon couldn't support millions of devices with this kind of connectivity. Too much too soon, data tier plans now throttling. We will remember these times in th future as th good ol days. When we could root and control our own device surf, text & chat to our hearts content 24 hour a day because our Droids did while they let us. Our success is catching up with them & they figure we owe them more for that success. Now they are gently taking back those aspects that attracted us here & we can have them back ( like it was) for an exuberant higher price on a completely different device of course. Off to plow more data while I can as fast as th Verizon Governor will allow, currently around half speed 6 - 700 DL 7 - 800 UpLoad Fun while it lasted.

Unlimited* does not mean unlimited. A * denotes fine print. On your contract it clearly states 5gbs, and nowhere does it guarantee a certain speed.

There no cap. Whhat the contract does say is they can throttle if they want...and they will

to me, this is just indefensible on VZW's part. regardless of which number of users calculation you accept (whether czerdrill or UNC's), the analysis is the same: Did you pay $200/$300/more to VZW for a phone? Yes. Did you sign a contract with VZW? Yes. Did that contract provide for unlimited data? Yes. Have you paid $200 a month for the past X years (like i have)? Yes.

but now, VZW can choose to unilaterally alter the terms of the agreement, solely to accomodate potential VZW customers who are not under contract, and who have not yet paid VZW a single penny?! is VZW going to correspondingly "throttle" back the bills it sends to its affected customers?! under no reasonable definition do i find this to be "acceptable" or "understandable".

if i told my existing clients, who i am under contract to serve and who regularly pay me, that i will be providing them less service than i originally agreed (and for what i've been paid) because i have a really big potential client that i am trying to bring on board, would anyone find that appropriate??

There are too many chicken littles ("the sky is falling!!") in this thread. Its a simple policy change to make way for increased strain on the network. There's really only three things Verizon could have done to remedy this:

1. increase the bandwith of their infrastructure (which would most likely cost hundreds of thousands of dollars [maybe millions] and would take a while)
2. throttle bandwith hogs to make room for more users (that one person that consumes 10GB/month takes place of 10 people that only use 1GB/month)
3. Do nothing, let the network max out, people will complain about crappy speeds and will most likely eventually leave.

Think of it this way: if you have a fixed amount of food (say 100 cupcakes) and there are 10 people, each person can have 10 cupcakes. Next time you expect 100 people but still only have 100 cupcakes so you limit the amount of cupcakes a single person can consume, if they take more than they're allowed they get penalized for it.

I highly doubt Verizon is going to favor iPhone users over the rest of their smartphone customers because that's just plain stupid and will bite them hard in the end. Granted the influx of iPhone users will rake in millions of dollars in profit for Verizon but that's only short term. If they do favor the iPhone over others in the long run, the other users will most likely notice it and either a) complain b) publicly bash/badmouth VZW c) switch to another carrier. Choice A doesn't really have a monetary effect on them but B & C will have a hefty impact on their income, since long term customers who dont want an iPhone feel like their getting screwed and will show their disdain with their wallets.

Its simple marketing guys, if you deal with a company on a regular basis and they want to keep you as a customer they're not going to treat you like crap. It's called relationship marketing, look it up.

People, it would be nice to think past the iPhone animosity a little. Is timing incidental with the iPhone coming online? Yup. Is it also incidental with a bug push on 4G phones about to be dropped out of the chute? Oh wait, yeah, that is coming up, isn't it? Gee, might also be an attempt to push more users to 4G. And hey, haven't Android sales been off the chart and more devices coming out at extremely rapid rates? Ummm, yeah, and they use the same data lines as the iPhone.

People, drop the conspiracy theories. Does this possibly have something to do with the iPhone? Probably. But I would more bet it is a combination of ALL of the factors I listed above.

To deny otherwise is ludicrous.

+1

Well said. I for one do not care as I will be on 4G's and teh wifis

True My bad for not reading th fine print. It was just a vent because Im sure they never expected me to use as much data month after month as I do & I know I'm not th only one. As for speed I know they control that. They always have. I havnt moved, same tower definitely a noticeable difference in speed. Thanks 4 th correction

maybe this should be directed toward VZW?? the "policy changes" VZW has made in just the last couple of months: NE2, unlimited data plans, shorter return period, throttling data. seems to be more "anti-relationship marketing." and we're just supposed to swallow it, smile, and say "thank you sir, may i have another"...

No one is saying that. But I think we are looking at a combination of factors all hitting at once. Everyone is quick to throw the book at the iPhone release when there are, in fact, many, MANY other things coming down the line at the exact same time. The increased Android sales with their handsets easily costing as much as the iPhone has got to be coming into play as well. There is no way they would have kept how they were doing business, iPhone coming or not. I can promise that right now.
