Does phonemypc just not work?

I'm trying to figure out how to view the second monitor in my dual-monitor setup. I've sent a note to the devs.

Edit: I didn't see the menu-->monitor button. Easily switches between monitors on a multi-monitor system.
Absolutely fantastic app.

thinking of getting this ap. i know, no sound, but hopefully on its way.
so basically, if my laptop is asleep at home (screen closed to prevent noise and light) i can still access it from the droid and open up to desktop, and view stuff etc? (not turned off, just on sleep mode) thats my main question. when im not home, i close the laptop and then it stops making noise and goes to hibernate or whatever its called....
THANX!!!

Hello all,

Answers to many questions in this thread...

* Seeing only black while viewing a video. This is caused by the video player's interaction with your video card--there are threads here where we describe this. Turn off Hardware Acceleration on the video player software.

* Updates. It turned out that most of our [serious] bug reports had come from keyboard use, and we were able to reproduce them all:
--PC app freezing while typing, and until reset (this is the worst of the worst type of bug)
--RDP sessions not working on a controlled PC (this is a show-stopper for IT and other professionals)

These were fixable, but required a complete rewrite to how we send keystrokes and process them on the PC. In addition, we have to pay great care not to do something device specific along the way.

We, as a group are fabulous at engineering and technical work. It appears we have a lot to learn when it comes to making predictions and estimating timelines.

Last, work on Imagine Multi-touch does not impact work on PhoneMyPC. Completely different skill sets are involved, and different people. You're still right about the eggs though :-)

@coondogg... tell us the name (not email) on your Google Checkout account, or forward us your purchase receipt, and we'll cancel your order. If you will also tell us what feature(s) must be done before you want the product, we'll email you when we get there. There is a certain amount of risk when you buy an app; some day, you'll stop using it and your money will be gone. But, if you decide you don't want something you bought from us, within a reasonable period of time (days, at least), just let us know. We'd like you to pay a fair price for great software, not buyers remorse :-)

* PhoneMyPC compared to LogMeIn
Customers mostly report that PhoneMyPC is superior to LogMeIn Ignition on the iPhone; out of about 10 who've given us a comparison, 9 of them have preferred PhoneMyPC.

PhoneMyPC has more features, but it's also newer and less developed.

* Accessing a sleeping laptop
I am not aware of any laptop that will keep the CPU on when the lid is closed; generally, only some part of RAM is preserved to avoid a re-boot when you wake it.

Back to work with me... I have a release to get out, after all!

Last night I was at the college (where I work) and I whipped out my Droid to show off PhoneMyPC. I got some sort of "Server not available" error. Since the building is flooded with wifi, I switched on wifi and then had no problems.

I haven't seen the error again, though.

@mitchb2,

Lag is the enemy of any good networking product!

That error happens when it takes too long to connect to the server or to get a response. It's not terribly common, almost always goes away if you try again, and frankly, we're not sure how to handle it. When we are trying to connect, we have to decide what is a fair amount of time to make you wait before we give up and give a reasonable error.

In the forthcoming build we have added a retry that should help. The retry is mostly designed to fix the following bug:

* Phone is asleep (Android has turned off WIFI to save power, but WIFI is configured ON)
* You wake the phone
* You immediately run PhoneMyPC
* PhoneMyPC connects via 3G
* You're clicking through features
* Android wakes the WIFI radio and loads the stack
* Android shuts the 3G radio off
* ERROR. Our network connection is dead

laptop phonemypc

so jus tot be clear, can this ap work on laptops?
has anyone used it on a laptop yet?
when the screen is black or with a screensaver (once u dont touch a key for a minute or so) is that what ill see when i tap into it or will i wake it up with the mouse on the screen? sorry for the retarded questions.....

so if i understand, if i close the laptop im screwed but if i leave it open, with screensavers it might be ok? thanks to whoever knows this!

Hi Zion,

It works well on laptops.

Consider for a moment just PC's in general.

PhoneMyPC is software that runs on the PC and connects to--and keeps regular communication with--our servers. If it cannot communicate with the servers, it cannot be accessed from your phone.

So, to work, the network card and CPU must be awake. The display and everything else can shut off. These settings are controlled through the Screen Saver dialog, Power Settings link.

The network card takes very little power, and the CPU, when idle, will probably scale back and consume very little power as well (on newer systems particularly).

But, device manufactures generally assume that when you close the lid, you're not using the laptop. The device is doing more than just sleeping; it is somewhere between "off" and "sleeping," usually referred to as "hibernating." The only reason this power state exists is to speed up the boot process so you can quickly return to what you were doing when you closed it.

So, PhoneMyPC will work so long as:
1) The lid is open
2) The power settings don't completely shut off the CPU or Network card

sweet. so i leave the lid open (tilted but not totally closed) and look at the power settings...(not sure where they are but can investigate). thanx for the reply.
