Hey, I guess this is the right place. Just posting an intro.

I've had my Motorola Droid for about 7 months and I love it. Its rooted and I'm hoping to further explore its capabilities as I expand my knowledge of IT and computer science in school.

I'm particularly interested in opening the phone up so that I can access zip files and the like that various sources often install rather than straight downloads. Any suggestions on this would be appreciated.

Glad to be here.

Kind of forgot to introduce myself, long time BlackBerry user 5+ years found a droid on CL for $100 and haven't looked back. Rooted UD3.0 with slayer 1200.

Newbie

Hi, all!

I've had my Droid X for a week now (replaced my :blackberry:) and I'm having SO much fun deciding what apps and widgets I need and how to get them where I want them.

Looking forward to learning a lot from all of you!! dancedroid

Hey all, names Kevin! Just received my Droid2 on Tuesday and Im loving it so far.
Ive already rooted it and installed Squidly in it too.
Kinda of a nerd when it comes to technology so I may ask a lot of questions when it comes to how to install certain things and how to do certain things.

Happy to be here.

Hi everyone. User name is Elftal and this is the first forum i've ever joined!!
35 years old from Melbourne, Australia. Was a long time Symbian user then
picked up an LG Optimus One P500 on a re-contract a few months ago.
Figured out i really love what Android does. Played around a bit then figured
out i needed more. More memory, more processor and more screen. Did some
research and thanked God Motorola mad a global phone that fit my criteria
so I jumped on Ebay and am now impatiently waiting for my D2G to arrive.

What else? I enjoy building and tinkering with PC's, Home theatre just tech
and gadgets in general. Also love building projects round the house. I suppose
getting hands on with pretty much anything, I will always give it a go.

Hope thats not too long winded, I look forward to being a part of the droidforums community :greendroid:

From the South

Found this forum while Googling for "Droid acronyms". My head is swimming with all the new jargon - and I'm no stranger to TLA's*.

Good thread for week-old-Droid users as myself, new to the Android OS tech, here:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/re...ummies-guide-android-terminoligy-lingo-5.html

I haven't found these yet:

OTA ........... possibly, I dunno? Original-sump'n-sump'n

FC .............. often found in threads relating to restoring, possibly File Corruption?

Thanks, all.

* And so I'm not contributing to the problem, this stands for Three Letter Acronym, defined as "a common behavior or communications style among like-thinking individuals or groups, often looked upon as a disease, or genetic defect, by those who do not grasp nor understand this communications methodology."

Actually, that may or may not be the true definition for the acronym, as I just made it up. :)

...so, where do I tag this thread?

Good afternoon, fellow Droids.... I purchased my Droid 2 Global a couple days after Christmas. It's the very first smart phone I've owned. I upgraded from a Samsung slider phone that wasn't even built for texting, no texting keyboard, but numbers with letters. SO, this is a huge huge upgrade for me. I've read some of the forums to try and find answers I have (most notably the very humble desire to personalize ringtones to certain people, which I can't do), and I've been reading what seems to be a foreign language. It's very sad, since I used to be a programmer in my former life. However, I do pick things up very quickly, and I'm good at becomming a self-taught expert when I have the desire to do so.

Rooting my Droid? No clue what that means or how or if I need to do it. Lots to learn. Looking forward to learning how to make my little awesome droid work well for me. Thanks for letting me introduce myself! :greendroid:

Amazing

If this is your first Android phone be prepared to be blown away like I was coming from an LG Dare.

First of all check out the top 30 app list.

Then read some articles about using task killers vs. not. (There is a really good one out there by the developers of Android as to why you should NOT use them)

Then I would get Launcher Pro Plus because it's BA and then just sit back and enjoy the amazing prowess that is Android.

I'm still learning but feel free to PM if you have questions.

Absolutely right-on!

I might be embarrassed to tell you just how much time I've "wasted" finding and d/l'ing apps, but... sounds like you would understand!

Coming from the :blackberry: Storm, which is not a bad device at all, but... this X machine is unreal. One week old today...

Agree about a launcher - it's already time to categorize all the apps. What's cool, too... been looking for a link to d/l Swype... it's already on the X! Just not in the Apps; it's in Settings. But you knew that....

Look for a PM, and we'll compare notes.

Hi, name is Kris. Had a BB Storm, which at first was fine, but had started to hang and get "uncaught errors," which drove me up a wall until I broke it on New Year's Eve. When it worked, it worked well, but my patience was stretched way too thin and it wasn't even fun. sadisor, a "fellow" BB Storm. Glad you had better experience!

Got the Incredible last week at Target. $30 trade in for my other phone, and a reduction in my data plan AND a much better phone to boot (also, the Incredible has the same charger as the BB and my husbands LG ENV2 - score!!).

Anyway, it's been a week of trying out the phone and LOVE it so far. The guy at Target downloaded Advanced App Killer, but have since downloaded another app killer and battery saver, which has helped immensely.

Love that I can use it as wi-fi, too.

A few things:
1. This morning my phone wouldn't turn on, and the battery wasn't even dead. ???
2. The keyboard doesn't seem to turn when I turn my phone into landscape mode
3. Saving photos: where do they go? They aren't in the gallery or on my SD card.

Oh, and one more thing, how do I add smileys to my messages/texts?

Anyway, having fun downloading apps. I have an iPad for my Apple fix!

Thanks

Task Killers

If you have an Android phone you need to go read the article by the Android Developers about Task Killers and why you should not use them.

Thanks Wefler. Is the top 30 apps list here in the forums or elsewhere? I had heard a little about not killing apps, but by no means do I really understand the pros and cons. I do have an app that is a watchdog...it tells me when any apps are using what it deems to be too much processing power or whatever... but it uses the most! Gah. TMI and overload. lol

I'll check out launcher pro plus....

Top 30 App list was put out by some magazine which I cannot remember at this point in time. I'm sure you will have a nice list started sooner or later anyways.

Here's the videos why not to use task killers; think its one of those hotly debated topics.

Hello Everyone, My name is KRMN, and I am new to the Droid Community, I have a Droid 2 and unfortunatelly is stuck on the M but if I dont touch it it starts looping in to the Avalon boot... yes I thought the avalon was for the Droid 2 but found out the wrong way it wasn't... I would apreciate any help I can get...

Anyways... previously to the Droid 2 I had the original droid but my ex is the one that did all the rooting and stuff and with this one I decided to do it myself and now I am learning through trial and error...

Nice meeting you all!

Hello people! I've been lurking around for a couple of days and decided it was time to register. I currently have the Htc Desire and found this site while looking for a custom rom. I'm fairly new at this so i may have a few questions down the road, i'll try to keep the stupid questions to a minimum... I have tried the cyanogen 6.1 and after fighting with the flaky gps i decided to give UD a try.
