Droid 2 Global ROOT, CUSTOM RECOVERY & SIM UNLOCK Tutorial

There is a thread over at XDA with few users who also couldn't unlock theirs. You are the first one I hear who wasn't able to unlock it with "official" codes provided by Verizon. Really strage!

i've unrooted to see if the codes work, no dice.

anyway, i requested they obtain a new lock code, hopefully it will work.

the foreign sim i have has a slightly different printed board arrangement than the one that comes with the phone (4 contact rows, as opposed to 3), but i don't think that makes a difference.

i know the card works fine in my GSM phone and registers on cingular ....

last resort would be to swap out the phone .... maybe there's a defective batch out there

Worked like a charm. Though, I had a little set back when rooting the phone after installing. I snooped around and learnt that I had to restart the phone before rooting for the first time. I did and it was all well. Nice write up btw..

Has anyone traveled to Europe for example with a rooted Droid 2 Global and tried if the Data (GSM) works? Before I do this, would like to know if my data will still work on other systems.

Thanks

Wes

I'm in India right now using a rooted D2G and getting 3G and 3.5G (HSDPA) data

are you using verizon's sim or your own? if your own, did the first 2 sim unlock codes they provided work to unlock the phone ?

sent via wireless device

Verizon sim/Global Email SGMD?
I'm using my own SIM on the MTNL Dolphin network (it's the only provider in India with 3G at the moment.) I unlocked using the code from VZW.

Getting data to work correctly is a pain in the ass though. I found like half a dozen different sets of APN settings for MTNL and finally got one to work, but it only works for apps/widgets data (can't get my browser to load webpages) so I'm guessing a browser setting needs to be changed but I have no idea what it is

Please excuse my beginner question because this root process seems much different than the Samsung Moment I came from where custom roms were always required.

Does this root effect the operation of the phone, remove apps, or change anything in any way or the ability to apply automatic OTA updates that Verizon and Motorola may send, or does it just give you su access and that is all?

I just got back from France, and it worked a treat. I note that a new update (which improves global usage) has hit since then though, and the new update refuses to install on my rooted D2G. I was using all Verizon gear (SIM, data plan)

tntc.tig, have you altered anything in /system? Like freezing/deleting stock apps? If yes - you need to restore them or update won't work. Root is not the problem.

since this thread was posted was there an update to the D2G ?
No
will this method still work regardless of which update the phone has received ?
As of today, it is working. If any future updates cause the z4root method to fail, I will edit the first post accordingly.

So, now that there is in fact an update, does z4root still work? Or did the update break it? I know you said you would post if one does, but still...

I still have not got my upgrade pushed yet. Can someone who has got it already share with us what happens to Clockworks during the upgrade?

I'm not sure as I'm out of the country at the moment and not using VZW's network. If someone could report on this and let me know so I can update the first post that'd be great

z4root worked... but I had to do it like 3 times before I knew for sure I was re-rooted.

You were absolutely right. I completely forgot that I had renamed /system/app/Blockbuster.apk to Blockbuster.apk.bak and Quickoffice.apk to Quickoffice.apk.bak. Restoring those allowed me to complete the update normally. I had to re-root with z4root, but that worked out just fine.

I ended up using Root Explorer to do all the renaming. Works perfect, and now I don't have Blockbuster or the non-purchased version of QuickOffice on my screen.
