Droid 2 Global ROOT, CUSTOM RECOVERY & SIM UNLOCK Tutorial

is an sbf a native OS file or environment ? still not clear on sbf's and what they mean ...
SBF files are unique backup files for Android phones. They are what VZW will use to overwrite phones that have been returned before being sold again as refurbished, for example. A complete .sbf will return your entire device back to stock, no matter how much damage has been done, as long as you have battery power remaining and can access the bootloader.
since this thread was posted was there an update to the D2G ?
No
will this method still work regardless of which update the phone has received ?
As of today, it is working. If any future updates cause the z4root method to fail, I will edit the first post accordingly.

Slightly off-topic, but how exactly do the sbf files surface on the net? Are they officially released by the manufacturer, or do they have to be leaked, or what? Is there any particular reason why the D2G sbf hasn't leaked yet?

thanks for the info sgmd1

i think the sbf lives on the fone, i guess with tools like rsd (manufacturer version) any file on the device can be manipulated. what i gather is that the sbf for the d2g hasnt been unlocked yet by devs, so i feel its best to wait until that happens before i root the phone, or root it and use the troubleshooting link i posted to revert in case there is a hickup.

i really like vanilla so i plan to root and rom today provided i have all the files.

SBF isn't contained on the phone. It is a dump of the various partitions of the internal nand from the phone, (like boot loader, recovery partition, system partition, boot partition/kernel) specially packaged in a container file (SBF) , which is digitally signed by manufacturer (Motorola). The digital signature is so people cannot modify the contents of the file. Phone will not accept the SBF if it doesn't have the proper digital signature.
There is no way to construct and sign SBF from the phone as the right private signing key is required (this is very carefully guarded by the owner (Motorola) piece of data!).
In other words SBF can only be made available if Motorola decides so, or if it is made available to service centers and somebody leaks it from there. This is why we are playing the waiting game. Either Motorola to release the file (as they have done for many of their products), or file to leak somehow from a service centre.

thanks leobg ... interesting info. could you point me to the dl link for the current fission rom ? cant seem to find it on team defuse site

rooted today using z4. what a painless procedure ... way easy.

now does z4root need to be an installed app so long as i am rooted ?
i chose permanent root. whats the difference between temporary and permanent root other than what the names imply ?

Help for unlocking SIM from Brazil

Hello Everybody!

I need help in unlocking my Droid 2 Global from Brazil, to use a Brazilian SIM. I've bought it last week when I was in USA, payed the full retail price $599, but I called there and they told me I was suppose to have an account in order to unlock it.

Is anyone able to help me with this issue?

Cheers

I too have the similar problem, I bought the phone from bestbuy without contract, bring it back to indonesia, swap the indonesia sim card, purchase the unlock code (there are 2 codes btw) from ebay, tried 2 codes, no luck, its says network unlock request unsuccessful...hopes someone out there with a kind soul, can help me out too :)

Rooted Phone really work with Sim card

Has anyone traveled to Europe for example with a rooted Droid 2 Global and tried if the Data (GSM) works? Before I do this, would like to know if my data will still work on other systems.

Thanks

Wes

i have a problem with unlocking mine. i have a foreign sim that i tested on another phone and it works.

i inserted the sim, called verizon and they gave me 2 unlock codes to try, neither of which works. they indicated there may be something wrong with the device, but before i head back to the store, i'd like to know if rooting may interfere with this functionality at all ?

i tried both codes twice (2 times each). if there is a problem with the hardware, then i must unroot before i go back to the store.

wondering if anyone else has run into this or if my situation is a first ?
the rep i called said they only have 2 codes per device.

There is a thread over at XDA with few users who also couldn't unlock theirs. You are the first one I hear who wasn't able to unlock it with "official" codes provided by Verizon. Really strage!
