Droid Bionic? Maybe not...

is anyone else really starting to second guess getting this phone. I mean I like most people who are reading this hav been waiting for this phone for a long time now and im starting to think maybe this phone really isn't going to live up to all the hype. yes I kno none of the specs are confirmed but im pretty sure everyone already has a basic idea of what it is. the most important spec is of course the LTE but as of rite now that's not a necessity for me. if it ends up having the same processor as the Droid 3 clocked at 1ghz I think I might just wait. my Droid x on cm7 is doin just fine. hopefully the nexus 3 (or prime) will go to Verizon. I would wait for that

i waited for a while!...picked up the d3 the other day and i am loving it. same as the bionic...exchaged the 4g for a keyboard. plus i got the bogo 150 for two. for the bionic it will cost me probabaly more than three times that for two of them just aint worth the money.

Until it comes out I don't know if it will be my next phone or not. My plan now is to wait a week after release to see what issues there are and then hope it isn't sold out.

I'm still on the D1 I got in Nov 2009. Plenty of "better" phones have come out since then and I've still been happy with my phone. so if I pick up a Bionic and a "better" phone comes out for the holidays I'll be ok. Well, OK unless that "better" phone has a built in switchable red/green/blue laser pointer, included overhead projector, and comes with the shaving attachment app.

I think that's great advice. Waiting a week or two will not only allow us to find any Bionic issues, but the price should come down and the Galaxy S II may come out.

I have been waiting since it was called the Olympus/Etna. There is no 2nd guessing for me this will be my next phone. Especially after messing around with the D3. I want it more and more.. You guys seem to forget Motorola said 3rd Q. So September is still part of the 3rd Q. Motorola or Verizon gave the Date of the 4th. It was a leak and we all know that the dates in a leak does not always come true and are subject to change just ask the Thunderbolt owners that have been wait for the TB before it was released. I will wait it out although I been having a major headaches with my Storm1.

I agree with this 100% and this is my strategy as well. Even though I'm more than likely going to take advantage of the Droid3 BOGO, I'd like to get my hands on a Bionic first just to quell any buyer's remorse from pulling the trigger too quickly.

I still love my Droid, but it is starting to have some issues. Nothing that I can't live with for a few weeks though.

Had the D3 now for a few weeks, and VERY happy with it. Came from D1, rooted, with CM7 GB 2.3.4. I don't care much for the hype of LTE, and I figure in another 2 years when I get another upgrade, LTE will be that much better. Hard keyboard was required, and this one surpasses D1 in every way. Messed with friends D2 and hated it.. something about this one! Don't get the hype with the Bionic.. then again, I've had a QWERTY keyboard since the first gen EnV, so that's that. I am very curious about the new quad-core phones coming this winter, but stoked with my new D3. Now just looking forward to getting it rooted, and getting all this bloatware pulled off!!! Just my 2 cents!!

I agree I really really want this phone I have been following it since late Dec and I am sure this is my next phone. Unless that other phone that is coming out has the wet/dry shave app I don't like electric that much. Lol

I have my doubts about this phone. Any phone that was dropped in testing (Etna) and who's name was moved over to another model (Targa) to me doesn't bode well for the product. To me that says it will be a product rushed to market and that to me that says it will likely be buggy. I would be cautious about getting this phone.

Possibly.
I am assuming the reason its been so long to release is from bugs, and I wouldn't be surprised if they release it too early.

I really do want the Bionic, but if it releases in September than I will demo the SGSII and the Iphone 5 or 4S or whatever the hell they are gonna call it and then make my decision. I cant be much different than most people in that thinking, so like I ve said a few times....Motorola is gonna lose out if this releases close or around the same time as the other 2. If it releases Aug. 4th, its probably gonna be a day 1 buy for me....

Often times during prototyping and testing you have multiple versions of the new device. When one of the versions encounters problems, you switch to a different version.

The targa has been in motion since late 2010. How would that be considered a rushed product? If nothing else, they would probably pay closer attention to this bionic given its failed predecessor's problems. You'd think moto's higher ups would give the "You better not F*ck this one up like the last one" pep talk and got the engineers on point and dead set on success.

Remember they didnt ramp up production on this phone. All they did was take the targa device which probably had a release schedule for late summer, and renamed it.

This is what I am saying unlike HTC who release their phones with bugs and bad battery life. Motorola would rather recall and start from scratch to make sure the phone they release is a good one...

i don't disagree that, in this instance, it's probly a good strategy to take a wait and see approach and not purchase on launch date. but, what you're overlooking is that the Targa (new Bionic) is a completely different device than the Etna (old Bionic). True, the Etna was obviously riddled with bugs and problems. but, the Targa has a different processor (OMAP vs. Tegra 2), a different form factor, different OS version, etc - in other words, a completely different phone that Moto started developing long before the problems with the Etna. so, just because the Etna had problems, that doesn't necessarily mean the Targa is having, or will have, any issues.

and, when rumors of the Targa initially leaked, it was targeted for a Q3 release. the Targa has been in development since the latter part of '10. so, there haven't been any delays for release of the Targa - it is still right on target, even with a Sept launch. the delays have been for a release of a phone with the Bionic name, not specifically the Targa.

all that being said, i'm still going to proceed with caution, and wait and see what Preach and others have to say about the phone (although, coming from a Storm, anything will look good to Preach ;)). i just want to make sure that this phone is "all that and a bag of chips".
