DROID Hints: POP3, GMAIL, forwarding and you.

Ok, here's one that I haven't seen a work-around for... GMAIL truncates messages from long threads and forwards... is there any way around this? My work threads often get 15-20 replies/forwards long and GMAIL constantly truncates them on the droid. This is pretty awful. Is there any email client/workaround? I've seen people say to 'find the original' thread, how is this done? I only find the ONE thread on my droid, and it's truncated, rendering it useless. HELP

So how can I start a new email on my Droid with the pop3 account that I added to my gmail? When I hit compose message, it automatically sends it from the gmail account and doesn't give me an option to send from my work email that I added. I would love to do away with the Droid's "email" app and just use the "gmail" app!

Can anyone answer this for me?

The GMAIL client doesn't allow you to send directly from a non-Gmail account. The work around would be to use the EMail client to send messages.

This topic has come up alot, so I was hoping one concise thread will help people who have been having issues with POP3 accounts and the default email program.

Now, for the cool part about GMAIL; you can also RETURN messages THROUGH those accounts, so it appears as if you're using, say, Outlook (or some fancy email client) instead of just checking your mail with GMAIL.
  1. Under the "send mail as" section, click the "send mail from another account" button.
  2. In the popup window, type the name you wish to be associated with the POP3 account and the email address and then click "next step".
  3. Select the "send mail through (yourdomain.com) SMTP servers. Doing so will prevent messages showing "[email protected] on behalf of [email protected]" when replying to messages.
  4. Enter your SMTP server information (use the information from the steps that you took to setup your POP3 account). You must make sure that you have the correct port number. Enter your username and password and select SSL if required (again, you can usualy verify this information with a Google search).
  5. Click "Add Account".
...and that's it!!!

This does work on the web gmail client but I don't believe it works this way on the GMAIL Droid application. Just want to clarify.

what part are you talking about? i have all of my pop3 accounts being forwarded to my gmail on my android.

Does the reply to address change when you reply to an email in GMAIL for Android?

yes. you just can't compose messages from gmail under a different account (in any situation).

This is an awesome setup ... I'm assuming it will push email by setting this up then? Regardless, I like using just the gmail app instead of the email.

help...new droid user... i am having the same email issues (keeps notifying me of new emails when there are none...yesterday i didn't recieve any new emails on my droid from either email acct..............i tried forwarding thru gmail like this thread instructed without any luck...can i use this process with free yahoo mail???

in order to enable POP3 with Yahoo, you need to have a paid account, or use the Asia Location method found on this forum.

this may be a stupid question but what issues will the 2.1 update fix....

issues? unless there's a revamp of the email client, there are no issues that will be fixed.

Another way to do this is set up your POP account to forward all you emails to your gmail account. I do this because I usually leave outlook express (I know, I should use something better :) ) open on my PC and it pulls down all my e-mail, so if gmail is checking it, it won't find anything. Doing the forwarding ensures that all the emails get to gmail.

And add me to those who would like to be able to change the from address on the Gmail app when you are composing an email like you can do on the gmail website. Usually I just use my Droid to reply to messages, so it sets the correct from address, but occasionally I do send emails from it and it would be nice be able to change it.

640k, or anyone who knows, once you set this up, is there a way to do a Mark All As Read? Since I already had mail in the other account, it pulled in 200 messages. Not really a problem, but I don't want to have to "read" each one in the GMail app since I have already done so in other e-mail app.

I hope there is an easy way to do this. I have two other accounts I would like to do this with since the GMail app seems to load the messages much faster than the standard.

hmm... i don't remember gmail marking all items as unread, but you can manage all of that through gmail.com much easier.
