DROID Hints: POP3, GMAIL, forwarding and you.

Another way to do this is set up your POP account to forward all you emails to your gmail account. I do this because I usually leave outlook express (I know, I should use something better :) ) open on my PC and it pulls down all my e-mail, so if gmail is checking it, it won't find anything. Doing the forwarding ensures that all the emails get to gmail.

Glad to know I'm not the only one stuck with Outlook Express. My boss still uses it as our mail client at work! Actually in the process of switching to Outlook as I type. It's about time.

And add me to those who would like to be able to change the from address on the Gmail app when you are composing an email like you can do on the gmail website. Usually I just use my Droid to reply to messages, so it sets the correct from address, but occasionally I do send emails from it and it would be nice be able to change it.
It should work fine if you have it leave a copy on the server ... if it doesn't leave a copy then yes it won't show up.

As for mark all read .... you can use the check boxes next to the emails and then after all checked click mark as read .... but there isn't an actual mark all as read without the checkboxes on the phone.

Right, although I don't want to do that because I'll hit my space requirements and have to go through the web interface to the server to clean it out. But the great thing is there are multiple ways to set this up so everyone can use what works best for them.

Thanks for this great info 640k!

I was able to setup my POP3 through Gmail and I'm receiving all my emails just fine. I have it setup so that when I reply to one of my POP3 emails, it shows that the reply came from my POP3 email account. But if I understand correctly, there is no way to compose a new email from my POP3 email account, is that correct?

Either way, this is way better than their email client.

Thanks again!

on gmail.com, you can, in fact, change who the message is coming from. through the gmail app on your phone, you cannot.

however, all labeled mails through other accounts CAN be setup to reply through those accounts.

That's what I thought. Thanks again for the info man. Came in really helpful... :)

I want to bring my Hotmail into GMail, but I have over 3000 emails in that mailbox. Is there a way to only bring in new emails and not bring in the thousands that are are in my inbox?

640, I have used this a while back but had to stop. After gmail retreived from the pop and pushed to my droid it removed it from the server so that I could not use it later from my pc. Even though the "leave on server was checked"

Went back in and researched in google and they had a note that said this may happen with some servers.

Any thoughts?

Its a shortcoming with POP3. K9 mail might be a better solution for you. Or you could configure your POP3 account to forward to gmail instead. You can still send through that email.

Personally id rather have gmail check the mail as it treats it like an account more than having your mail forwarded.

wow thanks 640k!! so much faster and all around better using the gmail for the pop3 i was getting so annoyed with my email before:motdroidhoriz:

Hey 640k, I just tried out something new and it works like a charm. I still have the mail setup like you suggested so I'm getting my POP3 just fine (a little slow sometimes but I still get it).

Well, the only reason I created my gmail account was so that I could use the phone. I've been using my POP3 account for over 10 years now and I didn't like the fact that I couldn't compose emails from my phone that would show them coming from my POP3 account unless I use the twitchy email app on the phone.

Well, I started looking through the settings in Gmail, and saw that if you have a POP3 account setup it gives you the option to set that as a default so when you send email it shows it coming from that account.

So I set my POP3 account as the default and sent a test email from my phone and it works!

Just thought I'd share this if you want to update your first post with this info. This comes in really helpful for those of us that have no need to use our Gmail account.

So here's what needs to be changed:

Gmail (browser)> Settings> Accounts and Import > Send Mail As (set POP3 account as default)

Now anytime you compose a message from your phone, it will show it coming from your POP3 account instead of the Gmail account... :)

nice find, i didn't think about that. too bad that only works for one account, but it's a good solution for people looking for it. i'll add it to my writeup.

the way i see it, is if people are still sending to my old account, i'll still get the mail, and if i send to them through my gmail account, they'll get the new address. but even if they don't update their information, i'll still get the mail.

of course, pretty much all of my email accounts are identical and people rarely pay attention to the domain name.

EDIT: I found a solution
I have figured it out :)

I changed my outlook from a POP3 to IMAP the droid is running IMAP and I spent a good 2 + hours last night cleaning out/sorting the 2457 messing in my INBOX located on www.Gmail.com

I am now a happy camper

PLEASE HELP......

ok so I am not sure if what I want to do it possible or not...
I have a Gmail account I have been using since Gmail was beta. it is my primary email and frankly the only email address I use.
I have it set up on my laptop via outlook 2007
I also have it set up on the DROID.

here is what I want to happen. when I delete email from the droid I want it deleted off the server so that when I get home it doesn't download the emails a second time.

is this possible? I NEVER use Gmail.com for checking my emails its always outlook and now my Droid I use the Droid while I am out of the house.

so when I delete an email from OUTLOOK or DROID I'd like it deleted from the gmail server so it does get downloaded again
