I reverted, did full FDR. Runnimg stock with no added apps for now, except email accts. Hope I can get by without adding lots of junk until JB arrives. Xmas in March! LOL Thanks to all for the help! My next step is rooting. Should that be done prior to install of JB OTA? I'm not sure of what is best? Advice needed. THx!

Wait until after the JB OTA is installed/updated before rooting.

Actually, since we don't know what version this soak is, or for that matter what version they will finally push out, and of course we don't know if the version that does get pushed will be rootable, I might suggest that you root and protect now instead. Being rooted and temp-unrooted never broke an upgrade in the past and I don't suspect it will this time either.

I may be mistaken about this but I thought an FDR would not remove root or safestrap? At least an FDR on ICS doesn't remove root, least it hasn't for me. I thought the only way to remove safestrap and root was to use one of the utilities (ie 1.82) and fastboot back to complete stock, and I'm not sure there is a utility for JB yet.

You may be right...it's been a long time since I've done an FDR and I may be a bit rusty in my memory. I don't know anything about the workings of Safestrap. I've always used Bootstrap so I'm not the right person to ask that question. There are a couple Moderators who are resident expert in Safestrap here on our forums. I'll reach out to them and see what their take is on it.

Same here as far as rusty but I just went on a search to reconfirm for myself. An FDR will not remove root nor will it remove safestrap (bootstrap also I think but that one I'm fuzzy on). The only way to remove them is through one of the utilities (1.82, 1.7 ect.) that put you back bone stock. And just for fun I'll do one tonight.

For the longest time, I didn't have SS 3.07 in the app drawer but SS still fired up after a reboot/power off. I did an FDR..still booted into SS. Downloaded the apk and the app was back in the app drawer..opened it up and uninstalled from there. No longer boots into SS but SS app still in app drawer..I plan on keeping root..so will just temp unroot with voodoo once JB official is released..On Christmas one now.

If do root now, and later chosen for soak test, should we accept update w root on phone, since we rsvp'd MOTO that weren't rooted?
My had is clogged with so many questions and answers , and I value all opinions and help.

Thread is tl;dr.
I'm having the age old problem, where adb doesn't recognize my phone being connected.
I'm on windows 8 x64
stock razr maxx
6.16.211.XT912
4.0.4

Have SDK installed, have tried about...8 different driver sets. All of which have resulted in the drivers failing to install. USB debugging and unknown sources are enabled. Set to MTP.
Not exactly a noob to rooting, have rooted dx and thunderbolt previously. Kind of at my wit's end on this.
Any serious help would be appreciated.

Also, the motorola device manager installer doesn't install the correct drivers. Shows what should be the mot composite adb interface as XT912.

Well...

"Officially", if you're rooted and you participate in the soak, you've violated the agreement since in the preliminary screening (from what I've been told... ), you must agree to unroot. Now, unrooting and temp-unrooting "should" look the same from the upgrade's point of view. However, I would still root and temp-unroot if I were going to upgrade (or soak), since we don't know if the new soak or final versions are going to be rootable or not, and most likely won't be - at least initially.

The reasons that they want you unrooted are "claimed to be" because they have to provide additional support to resolve upgrade problems with those who are rooted versus those who aren't. Now that may be true in the grand scheme of things, but those on at least THIS forum (and a couple others we consider to be on the cutting edge), are typically way beyond the curve and rooting is no more a risk to cause problems than putting the phone into a case - in a manner of speaking.

So, I say, do as you may, but remember you're doing so at your own risk.

Went from .215 to .211 last night! Longest part of the process was downloading the Utility. Now I will wait for the OTA update

Since reverting from .215 to 211, my Razr battery is dying very quickly. Was great while on .215 leak. Hope JB released quickly.

That sucks. I haven't noticed a drop off in battery life since going back to .211

It takes a few minuets to do it and with our luck it will be March 31st when they release it.
