Getting Custom Kernels Running on the Droid X

Okay, guys, quick question. With this project moving along so nicely is there anything you'd find useful from the staff here? I can put it to the mods/smods/etc. and ask, no guarantees, but I can try. :) Let me know and I'll see if I can do anything for you.

File hosting would be awesome and prolly some other things as they come to me or thrasher.

My thoughts:

1. We setup FreeMyMoto.com to be an info hub and even have links to mirrors and such. However, that host cannot provide any real file serving. So as previously-requested, file hosting would be one thing that would help.
2. Secondly, we discussed and we don't want to have to manage/moderate a forum or really anything interactive with the general public. As such, we want to continue using DroidForums (or perhaps Android.net - I mention this because I vaguely remember something about file hosting being more possible with that forum although I'm unsure if it really matters if it's via there or here) as our homebase for discussions. So perhaps a dedicated section might be nice to help keep this moving.
3. If you've followed this thread much, this project is SERIOUSLY lacking in driver devs. So anything that can be done to get the word out and actually bring in some driver developers to help with this would be tremendously helpful. Without driver devs, this project will fail. With driver devs, then we are unable to identify a reason why this project will fail. It's that important.
4. Help acquire more information on the ME811. This is the Chinese Droid X. It is unknown if that phone might provide some additional information/files that might help with this project. If this means helping this project acquire an ME811 (less likely) or helping ANYBODY acquire one (such as an admin or another project group) who is willing to work with us, this could help tremendously or it could be a dead-end. At this point, though, we do not know and this is an avenue that we want to investigate but are unable to right now.

I believe all 3 of these things could be provided (either directly or indirectly) by DroidForums' mods and admins. The last thing is wishful thinking but is still something else that might be able to be done that might help us.

I don't know if the Chinese Droid is useful. The update will be released later today. Drivers need working on, and if anyone wants to write up how-tos on building cross-compilers that would me fantasmirific.

I think this should be priority number 1. What other devices use the kexec? The Original Droid right? Maybe we should try to get in contact with the person who wrote the drivers for that.

I'm going to get in contact with the staff member responsible for file hosting and discuss things with him a bit before suggesting anything along those lines. I would recommend, however, that someone more familiar with the needs of the project take a look at Android.net and see if the file-hosting capabilities would be workable. If so we might be able to set something up over there, and I'd be willing to speak to an admin about it if people would want, but I could only really do the initial discussion.

Just let me know what looks and works best for you. And giving me some ballpark specs (file sizes would be good) wouldn't hurt. :)

Depending on how discussions go we might be able to get more devs interested as well.

I totally agree! My ordering was in no particular order - just the order that I started typing in. :)

I would kill for some driver devs.

200K is nothing, so hosting at Android.net would be no problem. However, I'd want to discuss it with an admin if you expect a lot of hits. Heck, the while things needs discussion if we want this project to take off. :)

So, does forum/file hosting at ANet sound like a good idea to the big wigs? If so I'll start talking to an admin or two over there about what needs doing a little later tonight.

I have some experience on kernel hacking, we use linux in our company embedded device.

I have successfully loaded your kexec kernel mod on a moto defy.

But i did not manage to cross compile the kexec binary...

How can I start a new kernel ??

You have to write a wrapper right now. I've been working on one for a while and it's not yet ready.
