Successfully downloaded it on the phone, downloaded winzip manager from the market and was able to move it from the download folder to the root of the SD card. The biggest hurdle (so far) has finally been overcome.

Thanks for the helpful links. I am very much a noon with this. Am I correct in thinking that rooting, by itself, does not erase your app s and data? That happens when you introduce custom roms?

When you flash the downgraded ruu you will wipe data and apps. So you will lose all your settings.
