[HOW TO] Remove bloatware

Does anyone know which apk controls the power control widget? Sometimes when I turn WiFi on or off the color of the widget (green when on, blank when off) doesn't change. I tried putting back all the apk but have no luck.

So, I renamed the apps, but they are still showing up. Amazon mp3 is gone but the rest are still there.....Any ideas?

A strange thing I noticed today was that my battery seemed to be draining quicker after i renamed a few apk to bak. I renamed, BB,backupassist, amazon, callerid and fm. Since then my battery only lasted a half a day. I am wondering if anyone else has seen this and also Im wondering if the software still searches for the app after it can not find it?

From the OP...
Before I go on, I want to note a few things. READ THIS:
1) The method we are using here is RENAMING the files. That way, if you decide you want an app back, you can rename the file back to it's original name.
2) If you're not sure what an app is or what it does, don't touch it! Several people have changed a file they weren't sure about and it affected the phone in some way they didn't realize.
3) Further, understand that removing some apps will break functionality in others. They interact in ways you can't predict. If you have a problem, rename the file back.
4) Don't touch BackupAssistantClient.apk. Apparently it can cause a huge disaster when doing a system recovery. Leave it alone.
May be your issue!

ok so i'm having the same issue, i rooted yesterday and today my battery only lasted half the day, i DID NOT do anything to backupassistantclient.apk but i did rename a bunch of others that were on the "safe list" anyone have any ideas?

If it were me, i would undo what you did, and do it one at a time. That's a really strange issue to be having though. I have better battery life, but I only removed like 5-6 of the bloatware apps. I still can't find the complete list of safe stuff.

Firstly you did a horrible job editing the quotes...lol...

Secondly, check my sig for apk removal info!

Thought I would post this here, it's a tweet from birdman (the guy that figured out root):

DO NOT REMOVE BACKUPASSISTANTCLIENT if you do, get it back on there NOW! a factory reset will result in a near brick.

YMMV

that happen to me today, phone works but you cant see the main screen so phone is worthless now... when to verizon today that they are sending me a replacement one hopefully i have it by the weekend...

if i want to rename cityid.apk it should be cityid.bak or something else?

I like most of you use the dolphin browser so is it possible to rename the browser.apk file? Slash if it is, is it just the browser.apk file showing up in root explorer? I tried to change it to bak and it told me it was read only which kind of confused me.

That is the proper method for renaming yes. And the CityID one is one that I renamed. By renaming it, it remains in the phone so you can put them all back when you need to (to update to froyo for example).

Question: Can this be done using a free terminal editor like pTerminal and su? I tried last night, but I got an error when remounting system as read/write. At the moment I am not sure if it is something I did or some sort of weakness in pTerminal.

Guys i have been messing with my wife's Droid X trying to get a few things working right, and im pretty positive all this Blur crap is causing my issues. First thing is that she hates and i hate the way the messaging is setup. She wants it like native android. Second is facebook is suppose to update all your contacts with pictures, well thats not working either. And the third thing is the gallary, its terrible, can someone show me how to get the native android gallary back? Thanks in advance.

Posting in case anybody else has interest on doing this from their phone instead of through ADB, but would like to do it for free. pTerminal will not work. In pTerminal, even with super user access, the mount operation is not permitted (I don't know why myself); however, connectbot offers a local connection option (connect to your phone). If this is used with su, mount operations can be performed and packages in the /system/app directory can be renamed/removed.

well, I've had my DX for about a month and the f'ing cityID app is in my face about purchasing now that my trial is up.... so I broke-down and rooted using abd method... i don't know why i waited so long. Installed Titanium backup and froze the app and presto, upon reboot it was gone from the app draw and no sign of it anymore. hank you for all the help found in the thorough guides on this site. to anyone who is skittish about rooting and removing bloatware... don't hesitate!

thanks
