How To: Root your Motorola DROID Bionic

Please don't make fun of me but...what is rooting? What exactly does it do and what's so great about it?

it allows you super user privileges giving you the ability to make alterations that would otherwise be locked out.

Hi Wooddale, can I ask you to lay out one more time why I will want to make a backup of stock root (what tool do I use for that?) and then ANOTHER backup of a forever-rooted device?

Well I have 1 issue to report after rooting. I can no longer double tap home button to get the panoramic view of the home screens. bummer liked it.

I have the same problem. I screen just flashes to the 5 panel mini display then goes right back, it won't stick like it used too. (EDIT: all fixed, you don't double tap the home button when on the home screen....just one tap will do and it works just fine!!!!

hm...problem

I tried the oneclick and it says it was successful, I checked with root check basic and it says i'm not rooted. I tried with petes tools, and that fails when it gets to the installing busybox, superuser, etc step. i'm in charge only, like I said it takes me through the first two steps successfully, usb debugging is enabled, allowing non market apps is enabled, and i'm using the OEM cord. Any thoughts?

Did you install the drivers first? Obvious question, but I thought I'd ask anyway since I made that mistake when I first tried to root.

Haha yes, sensible first response, I have installed drivers and rebooted the pc, I also pulled the battery on the phone. I received the .893 update OTA yesterday, if that makes a difference on the method now.

SEARCHING FOR THE PHONE (connect it now if you haven't yet)... found!
Running exploit step 1 of 3 (setting up symlink)... done!
Rebooting your phone... done!
Running exploit step 2 of 3 (modifying local.prop)... done!
Rebooting your phone... done!
Running exploit step 3 of 3 (adding su, busybox, and superuser.apk)... FAIL!

ERROR: adb could not be granted root access via local.prop method

Try again from the start, but if the problem continues, check your version
of Gingerbread -- hopefully you don't have a version where this exploit
was fixed.

that is the exact error I get.

***UPDATE*** 5:23pm cst

I now am rooted, I used the 1-click as found on this thread:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/motorola-droid-bionic/186745-who-got-update-tried-root-8.html

so if anybody runs into the issue I did, try this method, it worked for me !!

Hi my Droid Bionic Friends,

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is anywhere that I can find detailed instructions on how to unroot my Bionic safely, do the updates the Verizon has put out, and then reroot. I'm under the impression that you have to do something different when rerooting. Also, I saw something during a search earlier today about some thing you can do to avoid having to unroot for any updates, is this true???

Thanks

here you go i did and im all good except i cant re install my Liberty for now .. but for all the update fixed im loving it and bionic is now what it shouldve been outta the box so far .. there should be more to come as i already hear there may be another update to the bionic .. i hope this helps

when you do this and your phone reverts , before you continue to root it .. youll have to wait for it to reboot , sign into your account , then put it on charge only mode then hit any key to continue and youll be rooted ...... then you can unplug and go grab your awesome update .. and youll still be rooted there after

Thanks for the information.

This method is outdated

It doesn't survive the 893 OTA. You need to use the forever root method at rootswiki. rootzwiki dot com /topic/5484-r3l3as3droot-and-43v3r-root-for-the-bionic-v21/ It will survive the OTA update. If you use the one-click method like I did, it works fine for the 886 system but then your phone has to be reset to factory stock after the OTA to 893. Use option 1 in the script.

I'm going to try this out. I rooted then got the 893 OTA and am having trouble figuring out how to re-root my device. The previous once-click method doesn't seem to be working on my mac.

I think there is a Mac version. I used Windows after I forgot to unroot my Bionic before taking the 893 OTA. Then I discovered the 43v3r root package and tried the other options before finally doing option 1 which does a complete reset and puts the 886 system back on. This wipes out the root stuff and puts the phone back to stock except for the kernel and the radio, which apparently is not a problem as long as you haven't gotten off of the OTA path. It also reroots the phone with a superuser app that sticks through the OTA. After restoring the stock system, you can let the phone settle for a bit while getting your google mail account set up and making sure the market works, etc. Then you should be able to go to the phone settings and take the 893 OTA update without unrooting or being unrooted.
