[How To] Unlock Bootloader & Root Galaxy Nexus

Just finished unlocking the bootloader and rooting. Very straightforward and easy. Just curious though, will I still receive and be able to install OTA updates if I'm rooted with an unlocked bootloader?

Yeah, you'll be fine. I unlocked and rooted before I accepted the 4.0.2 update.

Unlock finally worked once I got the Android 1.0 driver installed properly. Now, when I double click "install-superboot-windows.bat", I get "FASTBOOT STATUS - download:00467800" at the bottom of the fastboot screen and it just sits there ... no black Google screen, just the Droid on its back. What's up? Thanks.

All it would require would be an efuse that blows the first time the bootloader is unlocked. Won't damage the device, but gives them something solid they can go on.

There was a rumor earlier this year that cell providers were going to start doing that. I haven't read any concrete evidence to support it.

No i didn't. Directly from Verizon? Link?

Hey, that case I picked up is annoying. The case fits pretty snugly, so when you grip it, it's easy to inadvertently push the volume button. I may take an exacto knife to it to see if I can remove the tiny part that covers the volume rocker. Screen protector seems decent though.

The link was to a DL article, but really all they did was link to the product on VZW's website. It seems like the trick to getting the discount is that you have to sing out of your VZW account, completely close your browser, re-open, go back to VZW, choose shop, browse ti the G-Nex Extended battery, specify that your device is the G-Nex (at this point it should be showing that it is $49.99) add it to your cart and say you want to check out now and on the next page it should show it as $24.99. After that you just manually enter in your address and CC and everything boom, a 50% off extended battery.

You may be able to do it without all the sign-out crap, but a lot of people were having their corp. discount show up which overrides the 50% off... some others were having a 25% off show up until they signed out. Some people also claimed they got it to work in-store. I called 611 to see if she could override my corp. discount before I figured out you had to sign out and she said that nothing in her system said anything about it at all and it must be a glitch.

Is the "root" folder you created on the root of your computer's C drive?

Posted this a little earlier. This morning I went into the Superuser app, and did the check for updates, and it didn't gain root access. I then also tried to run Busybox installer, and it didnt' get root access either.
At what point in the process should I try again, just from the doing root, forward?

Oh how having a nexus is nice. Now if I install clockworkmod recovery, I will most likely run into issues with installing OTA's correct?

Flashing Clockworkmmod recovery won't affect OTAs. It just enables you to make backups and restore. As long as you're on the stock ROM you'll be fine.

I flashed it last night and made a stock backup.

Edit: Original Article: [Deal] Galaxy Nexus Extended Battery is Half Off at VerizonWireless.com, Just $25 – Droid Life

Thanks Bro, I jumped on that. $26.24 out the door! Hell of a lot better than $49+. Plus, now I don't have to worry about shoddy Amazon knock offs with malfunctioning NFC chips.

Sorry I grazed over this.

I had the exact same problem. Can you verify that you're unlocked? In the bootloader it should say: Lock state: unlocked (or something similar). Also, when you boot up, the black Google screen will show a lock symbol at the bottom of the screen if you've successfully unlocked.

Once you know you're unlocked, power your phone off and connect to your computer. Three finger salute into recovery. Re-run the Superboot file (more specificaly: install-superboot-windows.bat) by double clicking on it in the root folder on your C-drive. It should boot to the black Google screen. Give it time. If it hangs, just wait 5 minutes, then pull the battery and reboot.

is that for sure? won't the OTAs look for stock recovery to install? Sorry, D1 memories days coming back at me...

... snipped ...

When I double click on the install-superboot-windows. bat file in the c:/root/ folder, I get the blue bar message at the bottom of the fastboot screen : FASTBOOT STATUS - download:00467800" and that is all the happens. No Google screen, no other change. I am unlocked according to the "LOCK STATE: line on the Fastboot screen. Thoughts?
