Is Droid Turbo getting Lollipop?

It's amazing how downright idiotic it's getting over at Android Central over this update. I don't understand where this sense of entitlement to every update comes from. If you buy a PC you don't get new Windows versions for free every time, and you certainly don't expect and old 486DX2 at 66mhz with 8mb of ram to be able to do streaming HD Netflix video on Windows 8.

Well, this phone was not only promised an update, it was promised a prompt one many months ago. When you buy a flagship device, you assume that you will get at least ONE update out it, no?

Frankly, all this crap with Android updates and carrier delays has me thinking about the iPhone next time... Yeah, I know there is the Nexus, but VZW screws that up as well by not even offering the Nexus until 6 months after everyone else gets it...

Good point "jplemt" if we, I had to buy this update how would I feel about getting t based on how my devise is working now which is great. ( for how I use it ) entitlement, I want it now, rut I find myself wondering into from time to time. :(

But these are not computers. Yes, when you buy a PC, you don't expect free upgrades. That's a different business model though, because the PC and the OS are in a way separate. Windows and Apple sell hard copies of their OS online and in retail stores, or the price is bundled into the purchase of a new PC.

Android is free. There is not purchase of it as a separate entity, and the track record is and always has been an upgrade path of at least one version, if not two.

The problem is two fold. First, manufacturers are putting out way too many handsets. That is what creates the fragmentation that Android is known for. How many phones does Samsung crank out? So it starts there, because as they release one phone they are like 3 months from releasing the next, and they have so many of them out there, keeping them all up to date is a huge undertaking.

Then you take VZW, who has 6 or 7 manufacturers, with all of those phones, and their problem is exponentially higher. Plus they want to add all the bloat and lock it down and all the things in order to push people to use their other revenue streams, and it is a wonder that we ever get any update.

The iPhone is clearly superior in this area. And the Nexus line would be, but VZW still finds a way to screw that up.

Which is why I hope that one day Google becomes a true carrier on their own network and I will switch to that, or to an iPhone at some point...

In my opinion, the iPhone is not exactly superior in this area. iOS updates are not exactly tested on a per device level, so older models go to crap after an update. Apple puts out a beta for every device they plan on keeping "up-to-date," lets users who pay for the dev beta builds test, and then they just put out the public version. iOS 8 basically killed the iPhone 4s, and Apple justed announced they plan on having iOS 9 support the 4s. There's not much testing, and they're still buggy when the public release version is put out. My previous phone was the iPhone 5 when it was first put out, and it was good in the beginning, then turned to garbage with one update, and never recovered. Countless resets, and it was still bad. The iOS betas were more stable than the public releases. Plus Apple doesn't exactly have any sort of customer support. Just the "Genius Bar." No email support and no online support, only community forums. And the updates also don't need the same kind of attention from the carriers before they are released, so they are just pushed out by Apple.

If I had to choose between iOS and Android solely based on quick OS updates that aren't crap, I'd go Nexus, but not on Verizon.

Listen, as an uber Android fanboy it pains me to say that Apple is better in a given area, but it's true. LOL

Apple is even changing how they do things... Anyone can get the iOS 9 beta right now, without the $99 Developer subscription...

That said, having maybe 25 phones or so, between the different manufacturers and carriers, is a lot to keep up with, not to mention the global markets that these manufacturers have to play with as well. The fragmentation issue is real. It used to not bother me, but seeing issues like this one and countless others, has me scratching my head.

I don't get why manufacturers don't stand up to the carriers like Apple does. I mean, what will VZW do, stop selling Samsung, Moto and LG?

Hardly. The iPhone, they do what Apple tells them to do for the most part, and if the other players had the balls to just make the same demand, VZW and the carriers wouldn't have many options... They have to have new phones to get people into contracts... it's not like they can go elsewhere if all the Android based phone makes just said enough is enough, we want the same deal that Apple has...

Apple is terrific at putting out quick updates. But as for the quality of those updates, not so much. And non $99 dev account people have always been able to get the betas. There's ways to circumvent the device ID check, or paying $8ish to get a spot in a dev account's 100 slots. They haven't changed the way people gain access to the betas. I used the iOS 7 and 8 betas on my iPhone 5 as they were released. iOS 7 beta I circumvented the device ID check, iOS 8 beta I bought a slot of $5. Apple does do a good job of putting out a quality Golden Master (public release) I've often noticed they ended up with some issues seen in previous betas put together into one. iOS public releases are essentially a general publicupdates.

But yes, fragmentation on Android is a huge issue, but it allows for each device to get personal treatment when it comes to OS updates

But that personal treatment, is exactly the reason why we have these update issues and why almost every Android device will always be behind the current version of the OS.

Samsung has gotten a lot better, I grant you.

Getting ready to install iOS 9 beta to my AirPad 2... supposed to be some nice changes...

Correct me if Im wrong, so the only difference to Between the Nexus and Turbo Internally are the Radios? I mean the Nexus 6 seems to just be a Bigger Turbo with a Smaller Battery. Other Hardware seems to be the Same. This is the first Moto I've Bought since my OG Droid and Droid X and do love it but since my Droid X I jumped Motorola and went to a LG Spectrum (Bad Move, should have went Droid Razr), Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy Note 2. I did get this one on a Whim since it was $1 and $50 BB GC though otherwise i'd still be using my Note 2.

The Moto X (2014), the Turbo, and the N6 have very similar internals. Minor differences in processor speed or screen size or speaker placement, but generally the same phones internally.
