Is the vzw nexus a "real nexus"

GSM phones are always more open then CDMA ones. Hopefully, when vzw starts doing LTE only we'll be able to buy unlocked LTE phones, and use them on vzw.

A nexus is made to be hacked. If you bought a nexus to run stock firmware then you're missing the point I think. If roms or kernels aren't your thing then get a Razr or wait for the S3 or even an iPhone would work.

Accessories? Well would be nice to get a car dock but other than that, I don't need much.

A true pogo pin cat dock would be awesome. But I don't think those of us in the States will ever see that car dock.

I played this game recently at another site. lol

Its a real Nexus. No matter what issues it has, no matter how much it doesnt get updated.

The real question is.... is it a real Nexus...to you. Cuz many of us have different ideas about this. I look at this from an app developer, Android source contributer. If I was one of them on Verizon....guess which phone I would get...

Yeah, okay. NO! The Verizon SCH-I515 is NOT a real Nexus phone! Glad I have your attention now, so continue reading. It becomes a Nexus once you Root it, and break the Bootloader, allowing for some sheer AOKP goodness to flow through it's high end circuitry. (I could really do without the pink unicorns) I think the development prospects of the phone and it's O/S are what truly make it a Nexus device, not what the carrier decides to do with lock down's or updates. The Development community has really grabbed ahold of this phone and made it special. The Developers have made me happy I bought this phone, and I will keep it as long as Roman and company keep churning out ROM's for it. The themers are great as well! When you can modify something to make it your own, THAT is what makes it special.... Not what Verizon sells you.

Absolutely LOVE my Nexus and in my opionion, it stomps anything else Big Red has to offer. I couldn't care less if VZW ever pushes an update as long as the Team Liquid and the rest of the fantastic developers keep pumping out the updated roms. Without the super dev community doing what they do, this phone would just be an ordinary device with vanilla android. Vanilla android plus unlocked bootloader is definitely a NEXUS in my book and I'm damn glad to have it here on Big Red. Peace out.

Yoiu guys are all right in the since that yes the nexus expreience starts when you unlock the bootloader and rom (which I have done since day 1). I am looking more on a broader picture. And my concern is not necessarily for this nexus but the next. And wondering will this be a short lived nexus project for big red. You knew from the start the droid-line was going to continue once it got big. Motorola was going to continue to support the brand along with vzw (or atleast until you had it for a year and a half :/ ) The endless waiting to get a nexus on big red I hope do not result in a short lived nexus experience. Who knows and whether 2 years from now we still choose to want to purchase android on the nexus brand. But it just seem like big red went with the nexus and have the feel of that will be the last nexus (I am not basing this on accessories by the way because 3rd party companies make the accessories). Any way this is just a thought and I am a deep thinker so just had to share.

AS much as I agree about what is on the Dev side of this phone, it is one awesome phone.

Great specs, looks, and display. Unfortunately if it doesn't connect .......well it is just a fancy ipod touch that you are paying monthly LTE prices for.

For now I am keeping my nexus just because I am out of my period as I bought on day one and was foolish enough to believe the hype about the fast updates and was encouraged by the fact that I bought my phone on day 1 and there were updates waiting to go on that same day.

Unimpressed about how when I asked for the car dock at the same time I was handed a mount instead of the dock that had been shown on all of the sites with the pogo pins and the way that the cables went into the dock instead of the phone, great design that removed the stress from the usb connector on the phone.........DENIED this never came to fruition as have the updates as well.

Little did I know that would be the beginning of a Love/Hate relationship that I have with this phone.

I always loved my OG and it should be like this with my nexus as well, but thanks to VZW and Samsung I will never buy another Samsung product again.

I was stupid not to trust Motorola and the reliable connectivity of their devices, I missed having the accessories that I wanted available at launch day like I always have before.

The whole experience has left a bad taste in my mouth and my a$$ feeling a little sore.

My new Motto .. Never Sammy Never Ever Again

Be sure to write when you get to lockeddownville! ;)

Is it a "true" Nexus? Well, yes and no. It's absolutely a Nexus because it's Vanilla ICS, unlockable bootloader, and Google updates the source for our device very often. It's absolutely NOT a Nexus because Verizon is holding updates. Now, it's not *entirely* Verizon's fault (though most of the blame should be placed squarely on them). The CDMA Nexus causes so many headaches for Google. They have to figure out how to implement the radios and binary fixes for CDMA devices. This is a problem because CDMA is not nearly as open as GSM. So many patents cause severe problems with getting updates directly from Google.

I'm assuming that when Google agreed to launch the Nexus on Verizon that they figured they would have much more cooperation from Verizon than they have received. Jean-Baptiste commented that it was disgusting that some Nexus' haven't seen the 4.0.4 update yet (clearly referring to Verizon at the time since GSM had been updated and the Sprint Nexus wasn't even released). I'd be terribly surprised to see another Nexus in Verizon's lineup. If that's the case, ADIOS! I'll be on my way to prepaid GSM.
