[KERNEL] Kernel (deprimed_test) - Break It If You Can

On Wednesday I upgraded from CM7RC2 to CM7RC4. Recommendations on the CM forums were to enable compcache, but I wanted to overclock, so I tried one of Prime's kernels (Deprimed) for the first time. So far, wow! Took me until today to read every post on this thread (if you haven't and you are new I recommend this).

I have a few questions, but here's where I am so far. Running the latest Deprimed with the Primed script. Finding that 900 is plenty fast, and I was getting reboots at 1200 anyway. I've only used OnDemand governor thus far. I've been running SetCPU for a long time, but today I adjusted the profiles a bit. Now because of posts I'm considering dropping SetCPU. I know if I plan to stay at 900 I can drop MSOC (don't need it even if I want to change). Before I switch I want to see how my profile adjustments affect battery life.

That brings me to my main question. I have NEVER had battery life approaching 10 hrs unless I ignore the phone completely. So what do you guys do? I usually run all day with BT off, but wifi and GPS on. Lots of apps running in background, many are frequently checking for updates.

I will leave it there for now, I'm sure I will have more questions soon. Awesome work, Prime, will be hitting the donation link today.

I am with you on the battery life but I am still barely reaching 10 hours, I usually run GPS all day and only wifi if I am running cloud, pandora or something of that nature. I did drop setcpu, and am testing out CPUtuner. So far so great to be honest. I am loving it the specific profiles are much better than setcpu IMO.

But also for battery there is plenty you can do otherwise. My main one was dropping screen brightness down, I never turn mine up unless its really bright outside and I can't see anything on my screen. Also have an screen off profile set to drop your kernal down, so it uses less power.

Theres more that works but those are the main that come to mind. I asked this question last week sometime on CM7 build thread and never got a response from anyone lol.

Thanks, I forgot to mention I do have both of those done. Display brightness is pretty low, and I run the cpu at 250/600 when screen is off.

Ouch, 10 hours? Wifi, gps and frequently updating apps will kill your battery life. Turn them off when you don't need them. Also make sure your screen brightness is set to auto or 20-30% max.

I only turn on hardware when I need it and I have my less important apps update a larger intervals and my more important apps update quicker.

Prime's kernel is very smooth even at 700 MHz, try it there or even 600 if you're happy with that. I use the ondemand setting. Bumblebee is a bit laggy for me. I have screen off at 250-450 MHz with conservative.

I definitely recommend CPU Tuner. Test it out and see if you like it. I used to use SetCPU and loved it but cpu tuner puts it to shame with all of its customization. The profiles really let you dive into some pretty sweet power options. In time, prime may make us a tutorial, but until then, just tinker with it. Good Luck.

When you look at your battery stats, what percentage does display use and what is its "time on?" Shouldn't be much more than 35-40%. That's where mine is at and I've been getting 14-20 hours on a charge.

I have done all those things ( setting up to update at longer intervals etc) and I have been turning off gps except for when I use it and it goes right back off and I still only get around 10 hours. If I am actually using my phone like on days like today (When I work 830-7) It last around 8 hours which is annoying.

Fair enough, I wouldn't expect much more out of your battery then. There are a few people who report MUCH better battery life out of their Droids. Not all Droids are created equally. Some are lucky, others aren't.

That is pretty much how i am feeling about it. I was thinking about getting another battery but decided against it. I am just jealous of the people who are getting 18+ hours *coughprimecough* :)

Yeah, no kidding. With moderate usage I can get 18 hours so I'm content with that for now. Once I get cpu tuner dialed in I'm hoping for more.

A part of me hopes that the 3g fix will help somehow too...I might be crazy on that one though.

Running 82.1%
Screen on 56.7%
Wifi on 99.9%
Wifi running 99.5%

I use Google Latitude and some other apps that track location, and I like the accuracy that I get with GPS and wifi on. I typically take my phone off charger between 630 and 700 am, and usually drop to 20% by 3 pm. It may be that given what I do I can't expect better, if so I can live with that. But please don't assume anything, I may be missing something simple.

As to a new battery, if you are still getting 8 hours, I wouldn't bother. I tried it, no help.

With your type of usage, you should probably be happy with that. As for your battery, what is the year on it?

In another thread someone mentioned buying replacement batteries that are actually new. Sometimes when you buy from Amazon (for example), you're getting a "new" battery but it's dated from 2009 or 2010. It was suggested that an older battery's life degrades as it ages. So even if the battery has never been used, it may perform like a well used battery. I don't honestly know if there's any science behind this but I thought I'd pass it on. Anyway, pop your battery out and check on the back for the date. If it's from late 2010, you should be ok.

I will check, I've purchased batteries from both Amazon and Verizon. I don't want to tie up this thread with a long discussion on how to get the most from batteries. I just asked because naturally battery life is part of the kernel development, and many report better results than what I see. Frankly with the limited testing I've done so far, no appreciable difference in battery life, but other performance is substantially better than any other kernel I've run.

Anyone else have issues with custom ringtones on the newest Deprimed? I'm assuming it has something to do with that deeper sleep function, and the phone not waking up fast enough to process custom ringtones, because if I switch back to Primed, I get my ringtones again, but I could be wrong
