LauncherPro Beta (SUPER FAST & SMOOTH Launcher!)

Those not liking th updates can alwasy go to fede's page and install a previous version. He has done a good job keeping up with the apks. The guy is dealing with multiple devices and trying different features. To each their own. If you like it cool, if not go to a previous version.
Im not telling people not to voice questions, but if you having lag issues submit the alogcat.

LauncherPro

you can get all the apks of previous versions there.

I'm stuck on an Eris for now (gave my wife my Droid so that I can get an X in two weeks :D) and LP runs nice and smooth on this little guy.

I have a bug now, and I think it has been reported before:

First of all I have LP set to go to my default home screen, rather than thumbnail previews, when home is pressed.

Now, sometimes when in an app and I press home, not only does it try to go to the screen previews instead, but the 3 thumbnails (just using 3 homescreens now) all bunch up in the top left of the screen, overlapping each other.

I believe it might have something to do with two apps recently installed: widgetlocker and quickdesk. Both of these apps ask to hook themselves as the default home app, but then pass the buck to the "real" home app (LP) when home is pressed. Since I've had both of those in, this above bolded thing happens. It goes Widgetlocker>quickdesk>Launcherpro.

Any ideas? I like WL and QD so I'd hate to give them up now...

I also have WL and QD. It took me a while to figure out the default thing, but for me this is what works:
Default app for the home button is WL helper. In WL the home button is set to summon LP. Quick Desk is set to launch by Long press of the search button, not the home button (couldn't get the double tap thing to work anyway). I got the squooshed screen preview thing a few times, mostly before either WL or QD, when I was running more screens though. There are more settings in the. 64 update to adjust; perhaps they will help.

If you set Widgetlocker as the default home, then configure it to pass to quickdesk, then in quickdesk configure it to pass to LP, it all works... double tapping home brings up quickdesk, and you can even bring that up over the widgetlocker homescreen. Tapping home once goes to LP like you'd expect. It leaves the search button longpress available to something else (I already use button shortcut so that is easy to set to anything else.) Still, I didn't get this thumbnail bunching-up thing until after I had both WL and QD installed, so I think it has something to do with it... perhaps LP is getting two very fast home key presses sent to it or something?

I get this sometimes...doesnt bother me...just hit home again to go back to the screen I game from.

Yeah but this only just started happening to me, so kind of annoying...

What memory settings are people having the best luck with? I'm not getting any FCs but almost every time I hit the home button it has to redraw/reload all my widgets. I'm only running 3 screens with 2 widgets each on 2 screens and just shortcuts on the 3rd.

Try the memory compression option if you already haven't.

Multiple Shortcuts!

You can totally customize the icons on the bottom...i have 15 icons selected on my dock! dancedroid just go to menu, preferences, dock settings, choose 3, and make sure you have Enable loop scrolling checked. I then go to Apperance settings and select Dock Background my personal prefrence is Froyo Wide.
*it may promt you to reset launcher pro for changes to take effect*
do so then go back to where you were and continue to set it the way you want it...also when on main screen the botom icons press and hold to change what shortcut you want to be listed there....and swype from left to right or right to left you choose to revail your other icons...*note* you may want to set up on of the icons as the actual app drawer lol hope this helps someone!

Now that I have updated to BBv0.4, I am back on the stock launcher.

LauncherPro was NEVER "super fast" nor "smooth" for me on the Froyo builds (@ 1 MHz) - it was just slightly better than the stock launcher for speed.

Now the Froyo FRF84B stock launcher is definitely fast & smooth, so I'm sticking with it: Usability is everything for me, and if I can't reliably get to my apps, I don't care if I get 2 extra docks on the launcher tab.

I suspect you're using Live Wallpapers, right? LWPs negate all of LauncherPro's speed optimizations, so you won't get much better speed than stock.

Have to agree, Charles. I have to admit that I watched with some skepticism and amusement when the first rave reviews of LauncherPro's speed were followed by complaints about it "slowing down." Much the same was said about Helix and other prior launchers. And as Fede has noted, adding features inevitably introduces complexity and slows down execution.

But on the whole, I've been extremely impressed both with Fede's design/engineering and his extremely good documentation, a combination that is all too rare among software engineers.

Been using LauncherPro almost exclusively for quite awhile now after switching from Helix1 and before that GDE. All in all, I think it's the best combination of features and performance available.

Maybe I missed it, but how many screens are you using?

Update added..
A Counter was added to the dock to tell you how many messages you get. Works with LP icons for now, might work with 3rd party icons later.. waiting for that.

LauncherPro Beta v0.6.5 released!

A new build of LauncherPro Beta is here! Version 0.6.5 brings one of the most requested features since its creation.
Here’s a hint:
dock_counters-300x61.jpg

That’s right, dock notifications! Now you can quickly and easily see how many missed calls / unread SMS messages you have by just glancing at the dock.
Now, before I get a swarm of people asking about it, I AM looking into the possibility of Gmail and maybe Email notifications too (although the latter might prove a bit too complicated to implement).
Please note that for these notifications to work, you must either use the corresponding LauncherPro-style icon, or have the shortcut set for the stock phone/messaging app. It should work with other apps as long as you use the LauncherPro icon, and it should work with custom icons as long as you use the stock apps. Support for 3rd party apps with custom icons *might* come in the future but it’s not certain yet.
EDIT: My apologies to users with MDPI devices. I just realized that the notification badges will look really big on MDPI screens. Will be fixed on next update.
EDIT 2: I just uploaded a new build 0.6.5.1 that fixes the issue with MDPI devices.
On a less interesting note, the new “Memory Usage Settings” have been moved into the Advanced Settings screen. This was done so that newcomers won’t be intimidated by all these options that most users don’t need to worry about.

I’m flying to Uruguay tomorrow and will be there for a few days visiting friends and family, so I won’t be doing much work until Monday/Tuesday. So if you post on the forums or send me an email, don’t expect a reply over the weekend.
Have a great weekend everyone!

LauncherPro Beta v0.6.4 available on Market

Warning: This update is mainly targeted at people having memory-related force-close issues, so if you’re not having any of those you’ll find this update pretty uninteresting (I did include something for you though!).
Ok, so the new Memory Usage option was very well received and seems to have solved a lot of issues for many, so I’ve decided to take it a step further. I’ve added an entire category in the preferences dedicated to memory management. Here you can tweak all the memory usage options for LauncherPro and make your own profile.
The old Memory Usage settings are now presets of these new settings. The “Light” option is now the “Moderate” preset, and there’s three new presets: Light, Low, and
Very Low. Try them out and find the configuration that works best for your setup.
There’s also newer memory usage options that weren’t available before, namely the type of caches to use for homescreens, and the option to disable caches altogether.
The normal cache type is the one LauncherPro has always used. The compressed type will save quite a bit of memory but might affect scrolling speed (on certain phones only, make sure to give it a try). The light type will save even more memory and might even run better than the compressed type on some phones. There’s no one-size-fits-all setup on Android, different phones have different hardware and different builds of the operating system. Please give these new options a try and see what works best for YOU.
Here’s a short log of what’s new in 0.6.4:

  • Fixed some force-close issues when removing packages from the Market in Froyo
  • Improved some code which should make screen rotations a little bit faster. Please note that android KILLS the homescreens when rotating, so all widgets, icons, etc. have to be redrawn. That’s just how Android works.
  • New “Memory Usage Settings” screen on the preferences.
  • New option to disable homescreen caches.
  • New option for normal, compressed, and light homescreen caches.
  • New option: outline highlights. These are like the glow highlights only they are a solid outline around the icon, so they are more visible than the glow highlights. You can choose between Classic, Glow, and Outline highlights under Appearance Settings on the preferences. That’s it for now. Next version should include some fixes for Froyo (thanks Google for once again releasing the source code too late so us developers now have to scramble to fix whatever the new version breaks in our apps). After that, it’s back to adding more features and more eye candy
