Mobile Defense vs Wave Secure

Does the Droid actually need a virus scanner?

If LookOut does the same exact things as MobileDeffense and WaveSecure, doesn’t the addition of a virus scanner make it more valuable?

No, and no.

There are no viruses currently in the wild for Android. That doesn't mean such viruses are impossible, but it does mean that anyone trying to create a virus scanner doesn't have much to work with. What are they scanning for? They can certainly create an app and call it a virus scanner, but unless they have something substantial to base their scanner engine on, painting yourself blue and shaking a rattle while dancing naked around the fire would be just as effective (and probably as much fun.)

If they claim they are protecting you from viruses, they are either lying or fools, and in either case I wouldn't put a lot of faith in what they're building. Such claims would make me skeptical of the whole product.

If they primarily build for Windows based phones, then it's quite possible that they have effective antivirus scanners built in -- for that platform. I don't know if they actually claim working antivirus in the Android world -- if people are assuming it because their other versions have it, then maybe they shouldn't be accused of lying. But I wouldn't base purchasing decisions (or indeed security decisions) on such a misconception.

Is there a way to register without submitting an "SMS buddy?" I text very seldom, and most of the people that I would trust with this sort of info don't text at all. What texting I do is primarily my students, etc.

I installed it, but it needs a buddy for register. Since I don't have any that would work, I uninstalled it.

Hi unkilbeeg and aaf709,
You can register by keying in your own mobile number. I will give your feedback to our development team. Appreciate the comments.

Good to know. That's an acceptable workaround, I'll give it a whirl.

What is an SMS command pin?

Hi LakeMountD,
Aside from using a computer to send commands to your phone remotely, you can use any other cell phone to do so. For example, to lock your phone, send a message with "Secure lock <PIN>" to the current phone.

Now, we've added an option for you to use another PIN in addition to the PIN used to access the application.

For more information on securing your phone remotely, refer to the help by choosing Menu, Help from WaveSecure.

Hope that helps.

Thanks,
cheewee

Thanks. I'm going to ask a friend if he's willing. If so, I'll re-install it.

One more thing, the password is numbers only, while I can live with that, is it possible to add letters? More secure that way. No biggie.

I've reinstalled it and finished registration. I can't log in on the website for some reason.

EDIT: It worked that time. It must've needed some time to set up.

A couple of questions.

Why does the lock out message alert read differently in the app's settings than it does on the website's?

Can you text the phone while it is locked out, so the thief can read the message?

How long does the scream last?

cheewee are you guys gonna make a widget that we can just press on the home screen to lock the phone without launching the app? or replace the native lock screen? just wondering.

That's exactly what I'm looking for, but with 4 digits/letters instead of 6 to keep it fast.

ok kinda off topic but can i change the sound the phone makes for either of these apps? I also have Where'sMyDroid and would like to get rid of it since I'm going to go with 1 of these 2 apps, but I don't want my phone to scream or siren when I'm just trying to find it but I don't suspect it was stolen.

An example would be something like I think I left it on a counter in a store and I'd like it to lock it (for precaution) but give the person who finds it a chance to notice they have it and return it. Or maybe in my quest to find it, it's actually in the cushions in my house and the siren ends up pissing off the husband or scaring the crap out of the kids. Or causing my friend to crash because I thought I left it in the store but really it fell out of my pocket in his car.

Yeah good point to the post above.

One thing I have noticed with WaveSecure too, whose GUI just looks much better from every angle, it doesn't seem to show the address when locating the device in maps. Mobile Defense nicely displays the address of where the phone is located and that is very helpful. WS only showed me the location on the map.

Am I missing something?

Hi funken,
It's different because you can customize a message to be sent when you lock it.
