Why is it almost every ones response to the update questions, "Root and you'll never have to worry about it again?" Have those of you that say that ever think maybe we dont want to for various reasons? I'm tired of seeing the answer to half the question root and dont worry. I know how to root but I dont want to because If something should happen to my phone I'm screwed at work. I'm vary rarely at the office any more

This is a place for discussions ice_cold. He was simply throwing out an alternative to receive the update - to a question that is asked over and over and over.

There are 2 answers to this age old question:

root now = froyo
don't root = who the hell knows

Besides that what he said is 100 percent true. Had froyo on droid for several months now...

The reason people say root is because you will get it before someone without root. If you have seen people ask and get the answer to root then why act shocked you got the same thing. No one can make you root your phone. It's just a suggestion for someone who is waiting for the new OS that's impatient. I'm not trying to be rude but there is no reason to add another thread on when 2.2 is coming out for non root people. You could have easily added to an already on going thread.

And as far as I know sometime at the beggining of August is when it will supposedly be released. Patients is a virtue.

Me personally, I recommend wiping the whole phone (you don't need to wipe the SD card) any time you are moving from 2.1 to Froyo 2.2.

Google remembers all your apps, and purchased apps and Contacts and all that to restore to the fresh phone Android System but if they are not compatible versions for 2.2 that you had previously installed then you just have to go to the market and reinstall any app that was marked as 2.1, so that it can get the current 2.2 marked version off the market.

Here's what I recommend:

First, I get Platinum Backup, and Astro File Manager, and use BOTH of those apps to make local SD-card backups of all my installed and system apps (only Platinum Backup lets you backup system apps, while Astro File Manager only backs up added in apps, and non-private apps, but it is still good to have redundancy so I like both programs). Then back up all apps.

Now, you guys are probably coming from 2.1 so use your favorite rooting guide (best type uses RSD Lite to flash a new recovery tool onto the phone which includes backup/restore functions so that you can then install a pre-rooted 2.1 ROM on there) using the restore function. Once you have root access, go to the market and install ROM Manager and install it (don't be cheap, buy the pay version so you can download all of the developer's cool ROMs from right within the tool). Then from ROM Manager me personally, I love JRummy's ROM the best, so if you want that one too then first make sure to click the Flash ClockworkMod Recovery on to phone option so you have the right tool to flash in the new ROMs using ROM Manager.

Now, at this point it is very wise to backup your existing ROM, so in ROM Manager select the 'Backup Current ROM' (this option allows you to change the name it calls the backup file it creates). I usually just leave the date stamp there but add a description for what it is onto the file name so I will remember it later. Then phone will reboot, backup, and boot back into Android again.

Then in ROM Manager go to 'Download ROM' and select JRummy and go to the Kangerade 5.0.9 and for options DON'T pick the Hancent app for Messaging as I never got that to work right either. I always try to just leave most all the stuff at defaults or close to defaults to start with like Fonts and Wallpapers etc, and change all that stuff later on. At least select the color of the theme you want (I use lime green). Now after all those options it will ask if you want to Backup Current ROM, and if you want to Wipe Data & Cache. If you backed up your ROM before then you don't need to do it again, but I highly recommend to Wipe Data & Cache before installing the ROM. When done, it will boot into a fresh Droid screen. There was a bug where some people would just get black screen after trying to log into their gmail accounts, so here, for now, don't log in, yet, just skip all that and go to main screen and then reboot again. Then after reboot, NOW log into your gmail account. Then over the course of the next hour, google will sync your contacts, and any compatible apps you had installed for 2.2 (which might be minimal) if you go to your Astro backups folder on the sd-card, you can use that list as a reference to what you had installed before and now go to the market and get all your apps back (you only had to do this because we are switching from 2.1 to 2.2, as normally Google will automatically remember your apps when you wipe). Once you install everything, back all the apps up again. If you take the safe approach and install everything fresh like this you will have better results and much better chances of having a successful install that runs fast with no lag, or bugs. I constantly see people here in these forums who have loads of bugs and issues because they are sloppy about the method they do upgrades. If you take your take and do it right, you'll have a good install with no bugs. Then if you like LauncherPro you can put that in too. Once everything works as you like and all is well, please MAKE FREQUENT BACKUPS for goodness sakes. Otherwise if you bork something up, you have to waste all day again installing everything from scratch. Just make your new 'base' ROM that is for you and so can always easily go back to that point whenever your want.

Hope this helps. And good luck. No time to proread my spellig and grammer right now...

Two more threads merged. Again everyone lets try and keep to topic of Froyo being released for the Droid to this thread. Word is still the week of 8/7, don't expect to have it on 8/7 if you do you are very lucky.

I did it! I made the jump!

After reading some of the posts in this forum, I finally decided to face my fears and root my droid!

So there I was standing on the edge of the cliff, determined to face my fear. I looked over the edge and my heart started to race. Should I take that step off of the cliff and root my droid, or step back and forever stay in my little bubble of safety and just sit and wait for update 2.2?
I then decided that I was tired of living in a life of safety, and that I wanted to live on the edge and feel the excitement of droid freedom! I knew that if I took that step I risked my droid crashing to the rocks below to never be used again, but I could not help but wounder if a droid could fly. There was only one way to find out, and that was to take that step. So with a deep breath I TOOK that step!
I am happy to say that a droid CAN FLY!

With the help of the tutorials posted here in the forums I am now a proud owner of a Motorola Droid running 2.2! All I need to do now is reinstall my apps from the market. (also picked up the wireless tether app while I was at it, NICE!)

Thanks for all your help everyone!!!!

This link has great instructions for rooting moto droid to 2.2 (including video instructions)
http://http://www.droid-life.com/20...-1-and-install-android-2-2-on-motorola-droid/

And then I used this post to finish getting the rest, just jumped down to the section for installing flash player, because I had used the link above to root the phone. http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...-froyo-step-step-installation-post528613.html

If I can do it, anyone can do it!
