Gingerbread requires a 1GHz processor and 512 RAM. The D1 can't run it. Sorry.

Nobody knows that.. in fact, Dan Morrill, one of Google's lead Android techs all but said that the statement that "Gingerbread, or 3.0, or whatever won't be available on phones with sub-1ghz processors" is untrue.. stating "I can make up crap too."
[see: http://www.droid-life.com/2010/07/02/google-shuts-down-gingerbread-rumors/]

Multiple Google personalities and spokespeople (including Koush who many of us put our Android lives in the hands of) have said that Eldar Murtazin (the guy who originally broke the store about Gingerbread and the lack of support for the '2nd generation' android phones) has no idea what he is talking about...

..bottom line, nobody has confirmed OR DENIED that D1 or any other '2nd gen' android phone won't get 2.2 or 3.0 or whatever may come between...

so... just like with 2.2 we will have to avoid the rumors and wait for official (or officially leaked) word from Google, Moto, and HTC...

..that said, back to 2.2 speculation

...just to be clear, I'm not being a D1 fan boy.. I'm sure that by the time g-bread drops I will be rocking a Droid X or some other late fall goodie that Verizon and Google have to offer so I'm not invested in having 3.0 on the D1, I just want the discussion to stay based on fact as much as possible..

UPDATE:

I spoke with a Motorola rep the other day while I was waiting to pick up my new Droid X. He told me that the Droid X will be getting Froyo as soon as Adobe releases Flash. It will be an OTA update that will have Flash included.

When I asked him when the Droid is supposed to be getting it, he said there was no official release date, but that it would be released "soon". Right after he said that I showed him that I was running Froyo on mine already and he chuckled...lol

There are a million speculations on the subject. All of which are made only because there is no official drop date that I have seen. If your impatient by all means root it and go for a ROM (Im using Sapphire ATM).

But at the risk of sounding sarcastic... 'There shall be no wine.. before its time.'
