Motorola Droid Case Reviews

Hi guys, just wanted to give a brief update. I ordered the Droid Suede Jacket - Droid Sleeve - Droid Case - Slim Droid Case - Droid Pouch - Droid Soft Case - Ultrasuede - WaterField Designs Droid Suede Jacket and received it today. It arrived quickly. It was sent out on Thursday and I received an email from Gary, who I assume is the owner, thanking me for my order and asking how I heard about them. In the package he also included a handwritten note. So far, top notch customer service. The jacket itself was just what I was looking for. Thin and well constructed. Its neither too tight nor too loose and the Droid fights just right into it. So, I'm happy with it.

Now to the crticisms. I also ordered a wallet with the droid jacket and upon receiving the package today, I found it was not included. I've fired off an email to Gary and we'll see if the stellar customer service holds true. Also, prior to ordering I had expressed my displeasure at the shipping charges. Look a few pages back if you're that interested. So just for kicks I weighed the droid jacket in its packaging along with the packing slip. It came in at .5 oz. That's right, not even a full ounce! So for them to charge $7 for ground or $10 priority mail shipping, is exorbitant to say the least. Heck they could ship it in a padded mailer for a couple of bucks! Now I know some say that the product itself probably costs more to produce than $9 but so what? Charge more for the product then and charge me a fair cost for shipping. They use USPS boxes anyway so I don't know where their increased shipping costs are being incurred to justify the price. There was not padding either, just the product in a plastic sleeve and the packing slip loose in the box.

So, in summation, all of this reminds me of those eBay sellers who charge a really low price for their products and make it up in really high shipping costs. Just leaves a bad taste in my mouth ya know? I'm sure that at their current shipping rate many people who want to boy just a Droid jacket will look else where because of the shipping cost.

EDIT: I ordered the one without the pocket.

I use the bodyglove. It makes the phone bulky. I also keep the back round clip part (without the belt clip, just the "notch" that the belt clip hands on to) on it so I can hang it on the car mount, which doesn't have the actual droid mount piece on it. It just kind if hangs in there, and the audio plug I insert keeps it steady on the side of my car console.

Ghetto. It works though. Pretty stable, side to side, not very stable up and down.

Body glove offers good protection and grip (the back of the phone, anyway) but the downside is the added bulk. I can deal with the bulk, I can't stand the fact it doesn't work with the car mount though (even though I have a bad workaround).

I got the Waterfield suede pouch with the pocket. It arrived quickly and fits perfectly. Shipping charges were clearly stated on the website and I didn't find them out of line. Case adds no bulk. I am also very pleased with the Phantomskinz Screen protector. Great solution for keeping the phone good condition.

Well, I emailed Gary about my missing wallet and did not expect to hear back from him until Monday. A short time later he responded letting me know he'd send my item out to me first thing Monday. My other criticisms aside, the customer service is top notch.

I am most excited about the Amzer Hybrid Silicone Skin Jelly Case. From what I can tell, it offers the shock absorption of silicone, but with the fitment of a solid plastic clip case.

Fommy.com has a video of this technology as applied to the Motorola Cliq: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sEC4XgUh0I (See my note about Fommy.com in the post above.)

It looks like Amzer won't be shipping this solution for Droid until December though. :(

That's exactly what I'm looking for.

Well, I emailed Amzer, and they said that it will be available from Fommy.com on 14 Dec. I still have not received replies to any of my emails to Fommy.com's customer service address. Which I think is unprofessional, but probably not enough to prevent me from ordering. Although the case does appear to be listed on Amazon.com (albeit not yet in stock.)

I've had the Droid since drop and have had the body glove on it since I left the store. I had to the file thing to get it to slide right, but after that it works fine. It's super bulky compared to any other case out there, but I dropped it ( on carpet! ) and the thing held true. I also hate having the thing in my pocket. I'm a tall guy, so I wear slimmer jeans and pants and this case is just not meant for it. It always gets stuck in my pocket because of the rubbery material and the screen will slide on its own if have in my pocket the wrong way. I think I'm going to go with a Sena Kutu and invisishield.

I don't know. I'm a tall guy too, as those things go, but the phone is small enough that it pretty much fits in my pocket, but maybe I just where looser pants. Certainly a Body Glove is on the big side for something going into the pocket. I think if I were going to go with an external belt setup, I'd probably get the Verizon. I've worn things on a belt before, but let's face facts, it kind of looks geeky (not that there's anything wrong with that), and it can get in the way (bumps, and when sitting, that's why I kind of preferred ones that would rotate horizontally). I think if I was going that way, the Verizon plastic holster would be tempting. It seems to offer up quite a fair amount of protection (excepting maybe the camera), and from the videos, slides in and out of the holder pretty easily.

See:

for a review.

The Sena's are nice enough, but there I think I'll wait for a Droid specific model. Unfortunately, no ETA yet on those. I just cannot picture how the Droid's square corners, slightly longer length and thickness, are going to fit well into something tailored so closely to the Apple iPhone. If someone has a Sena and can post a picture, I readily admit I could be wrong, but it kind of looks like square peg + round hole.

Review: Black Rubber Finish Hard Case for Motorola Droid

OK, another sub-$10 case for the Moto Droid, off of eBay. This one was titled Black Rubber Finish Hard Case for Motorola Droid by the reseller.

Here's a picture:

It is pretty much as advertised, and I would expect similar to what the kiosks will be flooded with in a week or two. Looks like the base material is kind of a white or light grey plastic, and the rubber paint or material is sprayed on the back and front guard. The fit is pretty reasonable, just kind of clicks on. Top guard seems to clear the keyboard. The finish ends up kind of a flat black, none of the base plastic is visible, once it's on the droid. The front guard goes maybe a mm or two above the screen surface, I have a Verizon screen protector on, there was no problem with clearance there. The net appearance is not bad, ends up a kind of flat black, perhaps more in keeping with the Droid stealth commercials they keep running (stealth aircraft are not shiny).

Pros

  • Very light -- not much added weight to the phone
  • Minimizes bulk
  • Offers some protection to corners, back while on the unit
  • No need to take out of case to hold
  • Goes on and off (for docking, etc.) easily

Cons

  • Constricts a bit on the top of the slide out keyboard -- fully clears keys, but if you have fat fingers, could make things a bit trickier
  • No real screen protection (if you're putting this in a pocket, that's all you can put in the pocket -- maybe not a bad idea anyway)
  • Finish seems to scratch a bit easly

I'd say overall, this is competitive with what Verizon is selling for hard plastic cases:

(not sure this will show properly, Verizon seems to sometimes block links into its web site). Some of the differences that Verizon's case has:

  • Verizon variant has a lowered area near the base keys (search/menu) - probably less protective, but easier to type and deal with)
  • More colors (clear, blue, pink)
  • Probably a bit closer alignment of the half shells
  • Verizon case probably a tad harder to hold onto (shiny plastic vs. rubber finish)
  • Verizon case costs a lot more

But otherwise these are pretty similar, I would think.

Because of using the car mount and dock I am looking for a "pouch" type case where the phone slides in and out from the top, if anyone at all has found one please let me know! I searched for about an hour today before I was ready to just go play with my droid.

i have found that the old ipod slip in case fits perfectly. open at top and very thin material. works great until i find something better

I like the look of the Sena cases. The only question is:

Elega - Sena Cases - Designer Leather Cases : Apple-iPhone 3G/3GS-Laterale

Laterales - Sena Cases - Designer Leather Cases : Apple-iPhone 3G/3GS-Laterale

I think I like the plain black elega or the red stitching laterales.. I don't think I'll deal with the non slickness of a screen protector so I'll just get a case I can at least transport with..

What do you guys think? Maybe both so I can switch between them!!!??

Thanks

I went with the Elega. Found it more natural to grab my phone from the top, also easier for me to put it back in the holster. The horizontal cases seem more cumbersome to me and more likely to drop my device.

I'm planning on leaving my phone "nekkid" and bought a fold over holster at the VZ store today. Not what I want, but will do until I find exactly what I am looking for. I will use the two cradles (car and home) everyday, so a true case won't be happening.

Since I don't have my phone yet, but I bought the screen protectors that VZ sells, can anyone tell me if they affect the screen sensitivity?
I got the same ones and they are great. Doesn't affect the sinsitivity at all. Went on easy and no bubbles.

Also, my team played in a tournament this weekend and the weather was horrible..rained all weekend. I got a waterproof bag at the local WalMart (in the boating section) that was made for iPods and other mps players. IT IS WONDERFUL!!! only about $12 here.
