Multiple phones - Root them, unroot them

Tried this on my Droidx with OTA 2.2 a bit ago worked GREAT.
I since have added roms and a few themes which made my device have sporadic issue, so I used the FRG22D SBF to flash back.

I then tried DoRootForWindows and it failed for me...

So I am trying this again.\
I thought it worked since I have Droid O/C with granted permissions in SU but none of the other root app's are getting granted access.
A few are saying I don't have root access and when I try to update SU via market the install fails.

Tried Titanium and it saying that I don't have root, but Busybox installer is saying I do but the it isn't getting permission access...

What did i do wrong and how do I correct this?

Thanks so much GREAT instruction on the OP...

That sounds a lot like your root didn't take all the way. That happens sometimes.

Well I tried it again and its the same.

Do I have to remove or wipe something before retrying?

Thanks
If you're trying this on a D1 it's not going to work because the initial /tmp switch won't work without root in the first place. You'll have to follow the link in my sig to root FRG22D, unfortunately.

OKay im stuck, i dont get the # sign after completing these steps. Any thoughts? what am i doing wrong?

could be a small typo in your string. I was having that problem. I had created a folder of "downloads" instead of "download" like i had intended. so typing "sdcard/download" was getting me nowhere untill I figured my mistake. so make sure everything is in its place.

also make sure there is the correct spaces: (Space)
  1. $(Space)cd(Space)/tmp
  2. $(Space)cp(Space)/sdcard/download/rage*.bin(Space)/tmp/
  3. $(Space)chmod(Space)777(Space)rage*.bin
  4. $(Space)./rage*.bin
and type everything exact the way it is in blue. * is what you type so don't worry about the rest of the file name.

I had the rootmyx2 method on my Droid X and was having problems. after a factory reset and rooting with this post's method no prob's. I have noticed it seems the slide lock is always messing with the alternate homes for me. when it locks it seems to go to the stock home, and when you unlock it has to load the alternate home. It will end up getting stuck on stupid and rebooting also a little laggy/glitchy in the drawer apps lists sometimes too. any of that sound familiar? dancedroid

My second attempt at a guide...

None of this I came up with by myself. Some of it has been posted and re-posted on numerous sites on the web. I'm just going to try and put it all together so it makes some sense to those of us new to rooting as well as to those of us who have been around for a while. My other guide has numerous options for the Droid 1 to root and unroot. The intent of this one is to cover multiple phones.

I would like to thank B16, Phoxus, Birdman, TheDeathly, XDA, and rootzwiki as some of what is in this post stems from folks in those locations, in some way or another. Actually there are probably far to many to thank but if someone big was missed, let me know.

Let's start if off the same way:

Step 1: If your phone is in this list, move to step 2. Otherwise, move along, there isn't much to see

The List
Motorola Droid 1
Motorola Droid 2
Motorola Droid X
Samsung Fascinate
Purpose of this post:
It is always a good idea to have a way back before embarking on a journey. That coupled with the same method working for multiple phones struck me as an opportunity to put this together.

Anyone wanting to hack their phones should know how to do this: From a stock phone > root it > make a back up > make changes > make another backup > screw it up > restore with back up or by going to stock > root it > restore the backup.

Step 2 option A:

Root your phone without your computer - This would be the path someone on a Mac could take or someone without access to a computer.
This works for the DX and D2 phone, won't work for the D1

Step 2 Option B
for the Samsung Fascinate

Fascinate

The info at the above link means you can also use that method with your computer or use Step 2 option A for rooting your phone without a computer.

unroot the samsung linkage/info is needed

Step 2 - Option C (same tools but using with the SDK and ADB. also included is how to unroot using sbf files. A Windows computer is needed for these steps.)

The Droid.Co Downloader application is a single file that lets you grab the other files, contained within packages, needed to root your phone without RSD Lite and unroot your phone with RSD Lite. There are packages, that also contain instructions, for the Droid 1, Droid 2, and Droid X available through this tool.
  • Visit this website: RS-Files
  • Look in the rootfiles folder
  • Grab Droid.Co_Downloader.exe and put it in a location you can find later.
  • Run the program and choose your phone to download the files you will be working with.
  • There are various file compression tools out there. I use 7-zip (7-zip.org).
  • Use the 7-Zip (or your own program's) File Manager to browse to the Droid.Co_Downloader
location and look for the droid 1.jpg, droid 2.jpg, or droid x.jpg file in the same folder and double click on it.
  • Once you've opened up this encrypted image there are sbf files to unroot and 3 files to use with the included instructions to root your phone.
  • For the D1 and D2 the password you enter is rootzwiki
  • Due to Motorola's cease and desist orders floating around the web it is Droidforums.Net's policy to not pass out the DX password, you are on your own there.

I have 2.3.20. Do I need to do anything different from Step 2 option A? Different files or anything?

Thanks!

@wreckwriter: no, it should still work with the new update.

OK, it worked. A couple questions if you don't mind:

Should there be a need, how do I "unroot"?

Also, I bought the clockwork ROM manager, mostly to get a solid backup. I flashed the recovery tool and told it to backup. Not sure it did, went very fast. I went into restore and manage backups (or similar) but its blank. Seems I did not get a backup. Any ideas what I did wrong?

Thanks again!

Here is the thread for unrooting droid x in these forums: remember to use search before asking. hardcore members of forums don't like answering the same question over and over especially in a different thread. good luck.

http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-x-hacks/88278-easy-unroot-process-droid-x.html
"Download a Terminal Emulator app from the marketplace.
- open your trusty terminal app (that's the terminal emulator you downloaded)
- you should see a $ symbol, now do the following (type each line exactly as writen after the "-" but do not type what is in the parenthesis)
- su (give a minute to ask for Superuser Permission. If it doesn't ask, go into Superuser Permissions and grant access to your Terminal Emulator and go back and retry this step)
- now you should see a # symbol (after each of the following steps is processed, you will see a #)
- mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
- rm /system/app/Superuser.apk
- rm /system/bin/su
- rm /system/bin/busybox
- mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
- reboot your phone. Tada, no more root! To prove this, try opening wireless tether or another program needing root access and you will be rejected. "

As far as the backup on clockwork... go search for the right thread. Lot's more info there.
