New Motorola Droid Update Available

I hope it does increase the battery life. Been thinking of getting the bigger one

2.2.1 says it has battery improvements but does that mean better battery life??

This is a perfect example of why id rather not do or deal.with rooting my DX, I prefer having officially developed.and tested updates for my first droid. I can see the clamor and reason for rooting, but it does nothing for my basic smartphone needs.

I am pretty sure we (the rooted people) get most of these updates before you do?dancedroid

That's usually the case. The leaks are quickly incorporated into the custom roms, and gotten out quickly. Why wait until Verizon and Motorola feel like throwing you a bone?

Fine whatever. I tried using z4root last night and finding out I still had to use a another freaking app to remove bloatware or a cmd line interface just basically killed all interest in rooting for me.

Why is there a picture of a Droid sporting 2.1 when this update makes Froyo better? Lol fail.

so glad I am rooted and rom'd ") a BIG THANK YOU goes out to all the people that make this possible!

I honestly don't use any of these I was hoping we would get the madden app like the droid x because that's the one game I wanted

If it's anything like the NFS: Shift game, the reason it's not included is that the APK file itself is >100MB, and most D1's out there don't even have sufficient space for it to be installed. Unfortunately, if it's anything like NFS: Shift; it will NOT appear in the Android market. I am assuming, however, that it will probably be a free demo version like NFS was, with an unlock feature built into the game. If this is the case, it will probably appear on the forums and will be able to be purchased that way.

The purpose of this update is to undo the damage done to corporate customers by FRG22D, namely the fact that said OS build rendered Exchange virtually useless. This update should have come along sooner, IMHO.

Because VZW has used the same info page since the days of the 2.1 launch; and only the text has changed. It's a "generic" Droid photo, so to speak. Basically, it's called being lazy.

Guess this definitely means we're not getting GB. That sucks, I was looking forward to getting that.
Whoa...sorry, did I miss something? Last I heard we were good. If the source was released--as we all know--it could be MONTHS before there is an OTA from Verizon...

To be fair, you NEED to get a bit familiar with the command line interface to get any serious work done on ANY Linux system; Android is no different. However, if you use some of the custom ROMs out there (Liquid Frozen Yogurt, for example) there are tools built into the GUI to do alot of this command line work for you.

The thing that most people fail to understand about rooting is that by itself, it does absolutely nothing special. It allows privelaged commands to run, and allows the system partition to be mounted read/writeable. You still need to know your way around Linux to take advantage of these capabilities.

From what i've been told, the only way the D1 is going to see GB is in the form of custom ROMs. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, since most of the ROM devs end up doing more with a given OS than the devs who work on the official ROMs. The Droid is EOL, so we're lucky to be getting FRG83D, although that fixes a critical bug so they sort of HAD to release it.

Yes... but the hardware is seriously dated. (In this world, anything more than 4-6 months is old). The new things they are adding need more umph to run and I don't know that the D1 is going to have the needed horsepower to keep up.

IIRC, the D1 meets the minimum REQUIRED specs for GB, but falls quite a bit short of the minimum RECOMMENDED specs. The biggest issue is lack of system RAM (256MB, IIRC) - it wouldn't be a good thing for Moto/VZW to push an update that caused the phone to become laggy. It's like trying to run Windows 7 on a PC with a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM - it will probably WORK, but it's not necessarily a GOOD idea.

This is probably a case of "be careful what you wish for".

Dude Freezbyte/Tron, do you troll every forum you frequent? First you rant about lipos on BYT, RCM, RCTech, RCU and any other R/C forum, and now you complain that all root processes aren't as easy as 1-2-3? dancedroid

So is anyone in here old enough to remember the days when your entire PC was command-line driven, and there was no "Windows" as we think of it these days?

You'd boot the PC and the only thing you would see was this:
