New Motorola Droid Update Available

So is anyone in here old enough to remember the days when your entire PC was command-line driven, and there was no "Windows" as we think of it these days?

You'd boot the PC and the only thing you would see was this:

C:\>

I'm only 27, but my parents would pick up old computers at garage sales for me to play with. I remember spending plenty of time when I was 8-10 years old playing around with those computers, trying to figure out how they worked. My parents were definitely not computer proficient so I was pretty much on my own. I actually didn't have my first "Windows" computer until around 2000-2001. I learned a lot of valuable stuff that can still be applied today. I'm now pretty much the go to guy when my friends or family have a computer issue.

lol, I had a top of the line PC (in the day) that had two 5.25 floppys (the REAL floppys) and no hard drive.

Command line is the key to everything. Half the rooting tools out there are just a UI that allow someone to click and go...the stuff behind the "go" is the command line goodness.

I got 2.2.1 a week or so ago. Was lazy and tried Z4root which did not work. Ended up using good old command line and was rooted within 10 minutes.

I'd love it if someone could make an update.zip. I hate waiting for Verizon to send the ota. In fact, I've never revieved an ota because I always grab the update zip from here.

Yes... but the hardware is seriously dated. (In this world, anything more than 4-6 months is old). The new things they are adding need more umph to run and I don't know that the D1 is going to have the needed horsepower to keep up.

IIRC, the D1 meets the minimum REQUIRED specs for GB, but falls quite a bit short of the minimum RECOMMENDED specs. The biggest issue is lack of system RAM (256MB, IIRC) - it wouldn't be a good thing for Moto/VZW to push an update that caused the phone to become laggy. It's like trying to run Windows 7 on a PC with a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM - it will probably WORK, but it's not necessarily a GOOD idea.

This is probably a case of "be careful what you wish for".

I agree that it would probably not be a good idea.
As much as I would love for all the D1 users (former D1 owner myself) to get GB on their phones, it probably won't be a reality, at least not officially.
But I'm certain some of the great devs in the community will find ways to incorporate a lot of the features!
