[Official] CPU Temp Results

As usual, if you are wanting to upgrade to Pete's Bugless Beast ROM and overclock to the frequencies found in this thread, please visit the three links in my signature. Even if you aren't going to that ROM those links will help you out.

I used Temp Monitor (1.99 on the Market, supports a developer from AllDroid.org) to gather all temps.

According to this document our max operating temperature for the Droid is 85C or 185F. Initially I was concerned about the operating temps while on 950mHz but really they aren't too far off what I was seeing on 800 or even 550, so I am going to let it stay on 950 and make sure I get these temps pretty consistently. I will update if I notice a difference over the next couple of days. Keep in mind these are the MAX temps, so there were times even where at 950mHz the temp was lower at one point than the max of 800mHz. So these are the highest I saw. PLEASE let me know how close of temps you are getting to these. The biggest differences were seen when browsing the web and playing games. The other temperature jumps were so minimal they were almost the same at times.

If you have any further questions about my methods or test please let me know.

Hopefully this is helpful because it took all afternoon.

Interesting. Subscribing. Thanks.

this is awesome info, keep it up!

i suppose i can contribute,

i am running BB with it overclocked to 800mhz. so far i haven't seen anything over about 102*. that was while wirelessly tethering for about 40 mins.

I have my Fail Safe set to throttle down to 550MHz when the battery gets to 45.5C. Moto rates the battery at 45C, but you always have some wiggle room when it comes to temps.

Except, the wiggle room is completely eaten up by the fact that the temp sensor is not on the CPU, and the battery temp readings are unreliable (not often updated).

So, it could be less or more. Everyone always assumes the CPU is the hottest object, but depending on what you're doing, it might not be.

I wanted to post this that I wrote from a different thread:

Yes and no. My desktop computer has been overclocked from 3gHz to 4.26gHz for about a year now (running 24/7 365) with zero issues. Over the long run the extra heat, even with my extra cooling, will damage the processor, but by how much and when is something no one can say for sure.

For all we know the underclocking and underperformance of the Droid has nothing to do with safety of the device but rather horrid battery life. 99% of phone users are not going to do a ton with their phones (this forum obviously represents a slight percentage of people that would and not even everyone here overclocks), and so if Moto automatically made the phone 950mHz the battery life for most people would be crap and it would be known as the horrible battery life.

So they scale it back to sell more phones. A phone known for a great processor but horrid battery life is going to sell a lot less than a phone with an adequate processor but much better battery life.

So while you are partially correct, we can't know just how correct you are because for all we know the entire scaling down of the processor is based on a marketing strategy not a life cycle strategy.

I will say this: If the phone was that dangerous at those temps, it would most likely shut down or freeze, and mine has yet to do so at 950mHz. Yes it will reduce the life of the phone, but reduce it to the point of destroying the phone in less than a year or two? Doubtful. Especially since they aren't at those temps consistently, only when doing things for extended periods of time.

By the time this phone dies from the heat and overclocking I will have long been interested in a better, newer Droid phone.

I am getting a new battery cover soon...was thinking about trying to drill some holes around the old battery cover to see if I could lower temps a bit.

Not really worried about the temps being dangerous, but rather the annoyingness of the hot back of case and battery life from extensive heat.

Not sure if that would make much of a difference though seeing as how most of the heat comes from the upper portion of the phone.

Not sure I feel like doing a new ROM just for this. The CPU NORMAL operating temps are up to 70C...my failsafe is at 40C and I rarely even see that...so the temps that I see are no way shape or form off by 30C.

? You don't need a new ROM, just flash the kernel using the recovery console.

And to your post above I've tried several things over the last half hour and the CPU is ALWAYS the hottest thing (except the battery) and there is always at least a few degrees difference and sometimes MORE (when gaming).

A few degrees is literally nothing when I am under the operating temps by about 30C. And furthermore, people are reporting in that thread that they are having a hard time getting the phone to boot with his latest release and had to go back to previous.

Only at the higher speeds (above 1Ghz). I've loaded the 950 on my BB and it not only works but it is faster than the evil.kernel that Pete put in the BB ROM (even when set at the same speed, 800).

Also there is a BIG temp dif. Just 5 min of RoboDefence (not exactly a HUGE CPU hitter) shows over a 10F difference.

Also you're comments regarding the max temp ignore that simple fact that the hotter the processor runs the slower it gets and the shorter its life. While the processor may be able to 'handle' 100C there will be a non-linear decline in performance (that's how it is on PCs with huge airflow's and heat-sinks). The CPU in this phone has NO effective way to dissipate heat other than through the case which is not very effective (relatively speaking compared to computers) which is why there is such a rapid increase in temp with even the slightest load.

But as always to each their own. Run as you see fit.

so we can just flash this over, and it won't get rid of BB or anything? just adds to it?
