Possible Ways to Crack the Bootloader

Support from a NoOb

Hello all -

Just wanted to say a few things.

1. As a disclaimer, I am very uneducated in what you guys are trying to do. I get the gist of it, but as to the processes you guys are discussing, I am in the dark.

2. I truly appreciate and am grateful for people deciding to undertake this project, as unlikely/improbable it may be. I say, if enough people have the motivation to do something, there must be a way.

3. I am currently an undergrad at Vanderbilt University. My math knowledge is nowhere near great enough to help, nor is my computer knowledge. Being as I am at a pretty sweet research university, I would just like to offer my help in any way you fellas would seem feasible. Whether that be talking to professors, reaching out to the other Android people I know who root and rom their phones, or LEGALLY somehow getting some computers at your disposal, I am more than happy to try and help.

Let me know if there's anything I can do, and if not, keep pluggin' away guys, because I'm sure somehow, someway, it can and will be done.

@bloodmut

Thank you.. PM me your email and I will contact you if I ever need specific articles looked up that my university doesn't have in the data base. And continue following this thread, at some point you may very well be needed. All the help the better.

@everyone... what do you think of my suggestion here:

I think we should make an android app which is an electronic petition and commitment to this hash collision idea. That the individual downloading and installing the FreeMyMoto app is agreeing to run the software when I distribute it and is committed to seeing that the bootloader is cracked. Let's make that app the most downloaded app on the market and lets get that in the press.

Even if my hash colliders fails.. that press might be enough to make moto release the keys! Let's get our voices heard!

I am very serious about this idea. We would effectively be tackling the problem from two ends. The crack and the politics.

^ ^ I like this one almost more than the crack itself.

I think its a great idea, even if the app does nothing but say something like "I support FreeMyMoto" lol. Haven't been able to check on forums in a bit, had almost 3 full pages to read through.

Exactly. Or even better, it says FreeMyMoto: I support and will participate in everything they work on.. and then automatically forwards moto a premade email. So for every app downloaded moto gets an email.

If they want to lock us down. Let them filter through thousands of emails. Let's get every DX/D2 user to download that app.

Heck yeah. Let's spam them like crazy.

I will make a mockup for the write up... and then resume my research on hash collisions.. Anybody want to make the app? It could be really simple.

Would also help to get it to the top of the most downloaded lists or whatever lol. Anyone know how to write up something that would send the email? My android dev exp begins and stops at googles "hello world" tutorial lol.

An app is way better IMO. So many more people will download it. I will personally do everything I can to get it stickied on every forum. Let's do it. I will make the write up but rather not waste time making the app... I much rather keep researching...

I was thinking... if I can successfully put together the @home collider, it should have cpu settings like.. background, medium, or aggressive.. so people can have it running 24/7 but can allocate their resources differently depending on what they are doing. I don't think I want people to start and exist it.. but keep it going no matter what.

Just a thought, but isn't this something we'd like to keep relatively quiet, at least as far as moto is concerned?

Given the way things have gone so far, I would think the most reasonable action for Moto to take in the face of a group actively trying to subvert its bootloader encryption would be to take steps to make that more difficult, especially if such a group had any level of success.

Screw moto, if they recognize what we are doing then we are doing something right. If they send a C&D, that will just be great press for the project, in my opinion. What's the big deal anyway.. its not like we are jepordizing trade secrets.. we are trying to use the hardware we purchased. If they want to void my warranty... fine, be my guest.. but what else are they really going to do. I don't think what we are doing breaks anything besides our warranty... its not illegal to hack the hardware you purchased.

I wouldn't be suprised if moto upped some security with the GB update that's coming to the X soon.
