I just want to ask a question here, I'm not sure what is happening there... but I just want to understand your position. Why would you *not* use Clockwork Recovery? I don't see any benefit in using a recovery that isn't built on top of the ROM flashing app, and the de-facto standard for recovery/ROM flashing. I mean, I periodically hear about people running SP Recovery, and it doesn't make sense to me. Sorry for my curiosity, just wondering.

I would not really say that CW Recovery is the "de facto standard"-it is one of two major options.
I do have ROM Manager, but I primarily use SPRecovery, simply because I have had issues with ROM Manager and CW Recovery hosing my phone. A search will reveal others having flaky behavior as well.
Understand, I am in no way trying to dis ROM Manager, the recovery or the dev-I think the app is extremely cool and has been designed to handle a much wider scope of functions. However, while flashing with SPRecovery is more work and not as slick, it always, always works and I have never had an issue.
For me, with things like this, I would rather do more work and have more confidence in the system and better stability than have greater convenience on the front end, but spending that time anyway trying to fix something that got hosed up.
Just one man's opinion.
I have never really tried Clockwork to have an opinion about it...But I have never had any issues while using SPRecovery, and I use it quite a bit.
Edit: The only issue I have ever had with SPRecovery is sometimes I make the Recovery name to big and it gives me an error to cut it down a couple characters lol
I also feel the same way about ROM Manager that it isn't always as stable as SPRecovery, but for the most part, it has been my experience that whenever ROM Manager ever had issues, they were usually tied to a certain version release (like right after the Market would update it, then it might've been buggy until the developer would usually fix it with a new build pretty quickly after a day or two).
I too have had a couple issues where ROM Manager was not reliable, but this was months ago. I have not had issues with it for a long time. But I still am a bit nervous about relying on it 100%, so whenever I perfect a build and get it just like I want it, I do install SPRecovery for a few minutes and perform a backup with it, but then I flash ClockworkMod back on and use that for the rest of the time. So I'd estimate that I get 1-2 SPRecovery for every 8-10 ClockworkMod backups I take.
I really DO like the convenience of ROM Manager since it can download all ROMs directly from the source and you can customize the features right there and then poof, it automatically can backup current ROM and you have the option to wipe cache and data, and it reboots, flashes and reboots back into the system without any further user intervention.
Lately what I do though, is first boot manually into recovery and then I clear cache partition ONLY, so that I don't have to clear data (ROM Manager only gives option to clear both data and cache, not one or the other). So then after I clear cache, I will reboot and go into ROM Manager and build the ROM I want. If I want to restore to a previous ROM, I usually select reboot into recovery and manually clear cache there, and then select the ROM I want to restore to in there.
I also just keep all the kernels in a folder on the SD Card so if I want to change one, I just reboot into recovery and select 'install zip from SD Card', since CLockworkMod lets you install zips with any file name.
As far as ClockworkMod hosing the phone, that is not possible I don't think. Back when they DID have problems with ROM Manager/ClockworkMod having issues with backup and restore (which I believe are fixed now), it would only restore a ROM which may not work right, but it was still always recoverable. I was always able to do 'Power' + 'X' and get recovery and re-flash something in that would work. I did once have to manually flash SPRecovery back on so I could flash back one of those backups back onto my phone.
So nowadays to avoid issues with ROM Manager, I just never update ROM Manager right when the updates show up in the Market, as I usually wait a couple days and then read the user comments and if people say that the update broke their backups or restores, then I just pass on that update since I always know the one I got works reliably.
Sorry, I always have such long postings. I never know how to cut them down shorter and still get my point across I guess.
