[HACKS] Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version

question: is this a custom rom, or simply 2.2 cracked for superuser access ?
in looking for a theme, ppl have suggested custom roms, but i just want to find one i can add-in or if i can make the modifications in terminal myself to get the effects i want ...

This is a rooting method, nothing more. All you get is whatever you were running before you did this, but rooted, with superuser access and a custom recovery image so you can flash themes, kernels, and ROMs onto your phone.

Sorry guys but I didn't get a chance to get caught up on this topic today. I need to get some sleep tonight to be functional for work in 5.5 hours, but I'll check things out tomorrow and post replies to anything that is still pending a resolution.

nice

motocache - well done - rooted moto droid one, running 2.2 w/ recent frg22d update, with your method - just need to follow instructions very carefully and its no problem - regained tether root aps without easyroot - everyone should use this and root - all videos play much better even on 3G - now onto kernels...... - seems risky, but there is enough information out there

thanks:motdroidvert:

Sleep? I didn't know superheros needed that.
:P

Still Stuck?

The longer I leave it between battery pulls the more it goes. I've left it on for about 30 minutes and its halfway through the first eye flash. :(
Any ideas what to do? Should I just reformat?

I read through the posts and it does not seem you got an answer. Are you good now or still stuck? Are your problems simply from trying to root your phone using Motocache's instructions?

Working on some updates to the FAQ (before digging in and catching up on any user-specific issues) and need a few more graphics in the OP - but the OP is at the max of 5, so I'm attaching them here. Kinda kludgy, but it keeps them all on the site (vs. hosted elsewhere).

thanks lots make sure if ur gonna do this read every thing first will keep you form having to do it a couple of times works great. was forced to updated to frg22d and lost root in the process this gave it back to me thanks agian

New questions 8 and 9 added to the Frequently Asked Questions section at the bottom of the OP.

8. How can I tell if my phone is rooted?

9. My Superuser application icon looks like it's an old version. How do I get the one that's a Ninja?
I should be digging in shortly to any user-specific issues that have not been able to be resolved by the Rescue Squad guys or other "lab dwellers" who may have attempted to assist. Although counter-intuitive, I will be working from newest (current "last page" back to where I left off -- page 40) so that I don't waste any time trying to solve an issue only to find out on a later page it has already been resolved.

new to site and first time poster.

I am using the steps to root my droid 1 with FRG22D.

I have gone through some of the steps already, problem is...the 32 and 64 bit motorola drivers link in the OP directs me back to this thread.

I started to root and entered bootloader mode in the procedure and my laptop gave me error message that I do not have the drivers for this device. I am running windows 7.

Where can I get the correct drivers for this device so I can go through the root.

Thank you

If the links in this step (quoted below from the OP) are bringing you back to this page (when they are hyperlinks to Motorola's site) then there's something else wrong with your system that you'll need to resolve before continuing.

3. Either the 32-bit or 64-bit Motorola drivers as appropriate for your machine.

If you have some strange, funky browser issue you could try right clicking on the link and choosing "Copy link location" (or whatever option your particular browser has that does that) and then pasting the URL in a new browser window.

That happened to me as well. Right click on the link and open it in a new window. The download will start. Then you need to open and install thru winwar.

thank you both! It worked opening in a new window. It must have been my internet settings because the pop up window previously I clicked download and it was taking me back to this page. All is well now.

I am going to continue with my root.

will post how it goes. :icon_ banana:

Due to the somewhat surprising incidence of problems due to accidentally naming the file update.zip.zip (reported here and via PM directly to me) I invested a pretty good chunk of time and wrote this guide that explains both how and why you should unhide file extensions on your machine if you're going to mess with this stuff.

Then I added this item to "Things you're going to need":
7. Important - read this: Ideally you either understand the nuances of how Windows file extensions behave and can handle the fact that Windows hides them, or, preferably, you've just configured Windows not to hide them. This issue probably trips up as many people as the odd Windows 7 problems. If in doubt, go read my unhide file extensions guide and then come back here when you're done.
It is my hope that from here forward this issue should not recur.

P.S. I say "somewhat surprising" in my opening sentence because in the instructions I really felt the wording covered all the bases and should have avoided the issue to begin with:
3. Do not unzip the MotoCache1_Complete_Root_v1.1-update.zip file that you downloaded in Step 5 of "things you're going to need". You need to copy this file to the root of your phone's SD card and then rename it to update.zip. Note: If on your computer you see the file listed as "MotoCache1_Complete_Root_v1.1-update" (no .zip on the end) then when you copy it to the phone you should name it just "update" (no ".zip"). There are several ways to do this (ADB, mount the phone's file system, etc.). Use which ever you're comfortable with. If you don't know how to do this there are tons of posts on it.
Obviously it didn't, so I didn't do a good enough job explaining it. Maybe I took it a little too light on the instructions for that step, but I really didn't feel like that part was overly complex for someone who wanted to root their phone. In any event, with a new, nearly 2500 word, guide dedicated to the topic, hopefully I have remedied that defect.

Thank You!!!

Thank you!!! I'm a dummy with this stuff, and I was able to follow your very detailed and easy instructions....I'm rooted now! yay!
