[HACKS] Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version

For those of you having issues with RSD lite on 64 bit win 7 systems here is the fix.

http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-rooted-help/78153-win-7-64bit-rsd-lite-fix.html#post804615

There is a bug in RSDlite that seems to pop up on win7 64 bit systems.

Thanks this helps.

Just an FYI - this is also listed here within this post from a few days ago. MotoCashe1 has also put this in his Frequently Encountered Issues (FEI) section under #6. I'm using Windows 7 and my phone shows up, and I can select the SBF file, but the "Start" button is grayed out and then #6 for post #317.

I am happy I am not the only one now that has discovered this issue.dancedroid

Yeah - I've got myself into a pretty stupid sleep schedule right now. Mess with this stuff until 5, 6, 7 am, sleep for a couple hours, and then get back up. I must be insane.

Your error [E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)] means that SPRecovery couldn't get to your SD card.

I'd suggest the following:

  1. Make sure the phone is not connected to your computer when you're trying to do the SPRecovery part. The file should already be on your SD card, so no need to have it connected to the computer at this point.
  2. Make sure that under "mount options" (in SPRecovery, off the main menu) you see "Mount /sdcard". If you see "Umount /sdcard" that means your SD card is mounted and you should hit that option to unmount it.
  3. Also in "mount options", make sure you see "Enable USB Mass Storage". If you see "Disable USB Mass Storage" that means your SD card is set to be controlled by your computer and won't be available to SPRecovery.
  4. After #1, #2, and #3, then go back to the main menu (use the power button to back up menu levels) and try "install", "Allow...", "Install...".
Let me know if this fixes it.

Well, I've followed your advice, but there is no change in the behavior or error message. Installation is still aborted.

When I go to the "mount options" screen, I see the following:

Mounted partitions: /cache

Mount /system
Mount /data
Umount /cache
Mount /sdcard
Enable USB Mass Storage

So everything seems to be as it should be. As long as I don't reboot, I've still got SPRecovery, so I''ll try a few things:

1. From main menu "wipe cache partition":

-- Wiping cache...
Formattting CACHE:...
Cache wipe complete.

Then I try the install again. Problem persists.

2. Back in mount options, when I "Mount /system", it appears to work normally reporting Mounted /system. Mount and Umount for /system, /data, and /cache all appear to work normally without error messages. "Enable(&Disable) USB Mass Storage" works without error

3. However, when I attempt "Mount /sdcard":

E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(No such file or directory)
Mounted /sdcard

So it tells me that it can't mount those directories, but still tells me it has mounted the sdcard, and gives me status at the top that the sdcard is mounted, currently:

Mounted partitions: /cache /sdcard

Umount /sdcard works without error message

Mount /sdcard always gives me the same behaviour regardless of what other partitions are mounted or whether USB Mass Storage is enabled or not. (Not that those should affect anything, but I just want to let you know everything I'm trying).

I've Googled around a bit and come across other forums where people have had the same error messages, and so far I haven't found a definite solution. There are several reports that if you just reboot or restart SPRecovery a bunch of times (it's not clear to me which), eventually it works. But those folks seem to be rooted already, so I think their SPRecovery doesn't get wiped in a reboot I guess. It's also not clear if reformatting the sdcard has any effect. Some seem to get it to work, but most report no change after reformatting or trying different sd cards.

I'm trying to think of any other info that might have got me to this state. When I first got the phone, I rooted using RSDLite from a Windows 7 machine and I didn't have this problem. I lost my root when I installed the OTA FRG22D Verizon update. I really just wanted to get rid of the nag screen constantly telling me to update. I thought Clockworkmod recovery would block the install, but it didn't.

When the phone is booted normally, I move Google Earth to the sdcard and can run perfectly fine with it there, so the sdcard seems to be working with the phone.

Anything else you might suggest I try? Again, all your help is greatly apprecitated.

I have the exact same problem and also could not find a definite solution either. It seems like this issue is the only thing in my way to rooting my phone as I have everything else working fine.

As stated, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Motocache1, thanks for all your help on this. Below are the details of the experience best I can recapitulate. The underlying problem is probably beyond me at this point, but if anybody wants to figure it out, maybe something I did can provide a clue.

OK, I got SPRecovery to see the whole sdcard without complaint and I was able to finish the root process. Woo-hoo! Here's how I did it. Short answer: I don't know.

Longer answer: each time I reinstalled SPRecovery, I checked the mount options in SPRecovery to see if it would mount the sdcard without complaint. Soon, randomly it seems, it did. I immediately went to install and update.zip installed without a hitch, and with all of Motocache1's friendly messages I knew I was home and dry. Reboot, voila! Relief!

Now that my phone status is rooted with Motocache1's update, I don't have to worry about having to reinstall SPRecovery anymore. When I power+x into SPRecovery, I usually am still unable to mount the sdcard getting the usual E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 [blahblah] message. When I reboot from SPRecovery, to save time I make sure I use the D-up trick to prevent the phone from booting and instead go into bootloader.(I should have used this trick when I wasn't rooted to avoid repeated SPRecovery reinstalls). From there I can power down and then power+x back up into SPRecovery. Eventually, I am able to mount the sdcard in SPRecovery without getting an error message. One thing seems to help a bit: if I clear the cache in SPRecovery, the next time I come back in it seems my chance of a sdcard mount success is much better; not 100% though. Maybe it helps, or maybe it's just been random correlation.

I should also note: before rooting success and before trying to cycle through multiple reinstalls of SPRecovery, I wiped my scard using SPRecovery and also reformatted it from within the phone's OS. This didn't seem to have any immediate effect on SPRecovery's ability to mount the sdcard, but I provide this in the interest of full information. Unlike others reporting this problem, I've never pulled the battery or sdcard from my phone in this process.

I'm planning on updating my kernel, and I think the manual update.zip method is probably safest, so I'll report back if my phone's behavior deviates from current experience. And maybe somebody smarter than me can figure out what's really going on here. It sure seems like a flaky problem that plenty of people are having.

Thanks again to MotoCache1 for all his work on rooting and tending to everyone's problems.

I'm going to be tied up for a little while as I'm re-reading all 39 pages of this topic to write the new "Frequently Encountered Issues" section in the OP. I may not finish before I decide I have to go to bed, we'll see how it goes...
OK, the "Frequently Encountered Issues" and "Frequently Asked Questions" sections are now in the OP. I think they cover all of the problems and issues that have come up in the topic that are actually related to the topic. I got it done in right about 3 hours, which is about what I expected it would take. Since it's almost 6:30a (ET) I think it would be a good idea if I went to bed now. I really need to start sleeping for more than 2 hours a night, or so my wife tells me.

Thanks again for your extensive work... and trust me when I say to listen to your wife! ;)

Yeah - I'm not so good at that. ;)

I just finished up a new topic and some other work. I'll have to check out any outstanding issues in this topic later today after I've slept a bit. Hey, it's only 4am -- I'm going to bed early!

Now children, don't make me turn this thread around and go home. Oh wait different forum I can do that in. Drat. In all seriousness though.. petty bickering is really not what I come here to see.

Gavron has been banned and will not be causing anymore problems Please remember to treat each other with respect. Thank you. Continue your discussion.

I know you don't really have to cover this but I realized I had installed dmupdater before I realized I should do the rooting the right way, but what will it do if I used it now?
I clicked it last night and gave it su but then it started downloading all kinds of things (I saw recovery.something) and I canceled it.
Any info on that?

Sorry for the vagueness of it, but I meant the zip file that by some account does the ota update of 2.1 to 2.2 FRG22D w/o going through 2.2 FRG01.

Thank you Motocache! I waited till I got the OTA (FRG22D) before I rooted for the first time. I finally got it yesterday and successfully rooted.

I initially had problems because I didn't install the driver. Since I was using PDAnet before, I thought I already had drivers. Went back and installed your driver and it all worked great.

I don't like the one click root either. I rather know what I'm doing. This kinda reminds me of the old DirecTV H-card days! The feeling of satisfaction from successfully rooting is the same as programming my old H-card and plugging it in and seeing all channels show up! :icon_ banana:

Thanks for your hard work!
