[HACKS] Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version

If its an update.zip I think it would? Not sure. Haven't gotten the update notification yet.

Sent from my rooted A855.

question: is this root procedure using a cracked bootloader or is it similar to those for the D2 Dx whose bootloaders havent yet been decomplied ?

This root procedure is unique -- the D1 has a bootloader that doesn't freeze or lock up your phone when the recovery image is replaced, it merely restores it to stock unless the script in MotoCache1's update.zip file is flashed; that locks/fixes the new recovery image in memory.

There's another way to do it, that doesn't even require a computer, that's proven 100% successful in limited trials, or if you just want root access you can use an application called z4root.

Question about changing keyboard

I used this month's ago to get root access to my Moto Droid. Still loving it.

I saw on Droidlife where the new 2.3 keyboard can be installed on rooted phones. I downloaded the .zip but am not sure how to proceed.

I've never installed other Droid keyboards or theme so it its all new to me. Do I just rename the file I downloaded update.zip and put it at the SD card root and try to install it with SBrecovery?

There are multiple threads on this. Originally it was for clockwork mod only but someone ported an update.zip to sprecovery.

Finally figured it out. I thought I had renamed the new .zip file on the SD card. Somehow I missed it and it wasn't renamed.

Once the filename was changed to update.zip it allowed me to install the new Gingerbread keyboard.

i need help ... since i rooted with this method ive been experiencing hangs and restarts when i powerup my phone. it doesnt happen all the time. but when it does i usually have to pull the battery and cross my fingers on restart.

the services i show as running:
paypal
setcpu (varios profiles tried, all recommended values)
silent mode widget
wallswitch
google messaging service
greek keyboard

i also have apps that autostart:
weatherbug elite (5 widgets)
anyrrs reader (2 widgets)
gpstracker (instamapper component)
wallswitch
setcpu

can anyone pls help out ? it might be an app but it might be android. cant be sure, unless i do a trial and uninstall apps one by one. maybe ill have better exp/perf by loading up a completely new rom ? im willing to give it a shot, but prefer straight vanilla froyo or gingerbread.

assuming the stock rooted froyo i am running is not buggy. i updated the phone to 2.2 via a manual update.zip process when 2.2 became available here on this forum.

Just got the VZ update (2.2.1) Didnt install yet. Will I loose my root? Used method above to gain it. How do I keep my root? Please help!!

bgm-alchemy - Did you install SPRecovery after rooting, or any other custom recovery? If not, that's probably why the update broke root on your phone. SPRecovery (and probably ClockworkMod; I don't use that one yet) should block OTA's once you have root. From this point you can use this thread at the beginning and re-flash a rooted FRG22D, and if you want the rooted FRG83D, use one of the releases after that.

You knew the risks and now you want them to pay?

Sprecovery would have allowed you to block this update.

Agreed. I flashed SPrecovery back in July and have not been prompted for any update since. With the exception of Chevy's SS updates. Those are really handy.
