[HACKS] Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version

I'm having problems as well (Moto Droid 1). I used this method "Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version" originally on Froyo and everything worked perfectly. Now I am getting the truly annoying update message.

I have the file "bede60e851bb.signed-voles-FRG83D-from-FRG22D.bede60e8.zip"
I've unziped it, and edited the "updater-script" commenting out line 1054 "# package_extract_dir("recovery", "/system");"
and adding "set_perm(0, 0, 6755, "/system/bin/su");"
I then rezip the files into update.zip. In SBRecovery on my phone I get the following:

Finding Update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.

No real error, and no real results. I've selected the option to allow update.

Some questions:
Should I use Notepad++ ANSI or UNICODE? Are there any setting in N++ that I need to change?
I've used both WinZip and WinRAR to create the update.zip; which is preferred?
Are there any special settings I need to set for the zip archive?

I have a Droid 1
Rooted Froyo
Stock ROM
0 Customizations
I do not want to change ROMS, I don't want to stay on my current version. All I want is ROOT on FRG83D.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

First, apologize to your Droid.

APOLOGIZE!!!

Now, install a non-raped version of the update file, apologize to your Droid again, then follow this guide to reroot it. It works fine. Heck, it probably takes less time to do than what you just did, and your phone is already hooked to the PC.

Go to custom roms section, under metickone, there is a stock rooted frg83d rom (odexed). Download update.zip and install thru Sprecovery.

He just said he didn't want a ROM. That's not going to help.
[/QUOTE]

I was referring to the STOCK rooted odexed frg83d...not the metickone custom rom. Wouldnt installing that be the equivalent to updating to OTA frg83d, loosing root, then re-rooting?

The most likely outcome of that scenario would be a bootloop forcing a wipe and reinstall, which is exactly what the poster didn't want to happen. The next most likely outcome would be an okay install but with major issues, eventually forcing a wipe or ROM install. The best outcome, but least likely, would have been a clean install with no issues. With the law of averages being what they are, and the fact that even the stock-rooted ROMs are custom ROMs when it comes to the rules of installing (until someone proves me otherwise), this just seemed like the safer bet. :)

Ok I've updated to 2.2.1 but I've no space?

First, I have to thank all the posters in this forum (and this topic). I could not have learned/done what I have w/out the time and patience in explaining everything. So thank you (and my droid 1 running @ 1Ghz thanks you :)).

With that out of the way, I hate to sound like all the other noobs (Even though I'm one step up from a noob - Noob Plus), but I'm not sure if this has been asked (or answered) before, but here goes nothing.

Ok short version: I grabbed myself a copy of FRG83D-Deodexed-m1. I renamed it update.zip and put it in the root of my SD Card. Booting to SPRecovery i then updated with that update.

It seems I did mostly ok. I'm still rooted, and i've got 2.2.1.

My only problem is that now I've run out of space on my device?!?!?!? Even before i did this Using Titanium Backup, moved as many of the larger apps to the SD card (not the critical/important ones mind you, the games and other non-critical apps).

But where before the update i was about 15% free (not great but do-able), i'm not at around 6% free, and i'm not able to get text messages. I tried looking for apps taking up space, but again most of the biggies are already on my SD card.

The only thing i could think is that the Update file i used to update to 2.2.1 was about 76MB. So that must have moved from the SD card onto my device. Is there anyway to clean up any older update/ROM Files to give me back my space?

Is this normal? Did i do something wrong?

Please help (if at all possible).

Thanks again for all your help,

A (Rooted, but lacking in space) Bug :motdroidhoriz:

When you decide to go that route, let me know..I have some apps for keeping your info when flashing ROMs! ;)

Thanks! I'll be off work tomorrow so I'll probably work on it then. Meaning I'll be back here as well.

I hate to add crap to this thread and make it longer without any useful info but I decided to go ahead and do the root process tonight since I am off work tomorrow and figured I don't want to spend my day sitting around messing with my phone, or at least if I decide to, the root part is out of the way!

I followed the instructions and it appears that all went well and I believe that I am now rooted. So I guess I have a few options and lots of questions but for now I guess I'd like to try overclocking and see how my cpu runs overclocked. After that I guess I can move on to making backups and maybe dealing with some custom roms.

Actually make a backup now. If anything goes wrong you will have a good clean slate to go back too.

Well, you can download SetCPU or Droid Overclock from the market for overclocking purposes. Both are paid apps. You can also flash different kernels for a higher max but you should make backups before doing so. If you need help with anything just let me know.

No problem. Just go into recovery like you did when you installed the zip. X+Power, and select backup/restore and then select advanced nandroid backup. This allows you to name the backup rather than it naming it for you with the normal nandroid backup. Select the astrics, name the backup, and select perform backup. It will do it's thing and will eventually say done. Then press power and reboot. It will be inside the nandroid folder on your SD card.

Exactly! It seems like a lot because its new but, it becomes second nature in NO time, trust me! Always make a backup before flashing ANYthing!

Done. Thank you very very much.

Now, what does this backup provide? Is it essentially a complete snapshot of my entire o.s. as it is right now? Or is it something else?
