Rooting the Droid X?

I would donate cpu cycles if need be. my machine sits mostly idle anyways. I know that we would need a huge cluster to even make a dent if it is RSA 2048...

What does that mean?

I am willing to allow my machine to be used in a cluster (much as folding@home does... or seti for that matter) in order to help people crack the encryption.

I have a machine thats also just connected to the internet and rarely used. How can I partake in helping out?

Well first someone would have to want to do this and set it up. I was merely expressing the fact that I would be more than willing to do this, as would others I assume.

you guys say moto doesnt care about locking the phone down, that maybe true but look at the nexus one. it came pretty much unlocked. so to compare that would mean htc doesnt care about rooting. then look at the incredible and how long its taken to get root. i guess my point is that its not the phone developers that care. its vzw and they want their phones locked down. vzw is apple in the carrier world. they want to have control over everything it will get hacked if man made it man can cracked but it will not be as quick as the droid nor be as full a root. ie meaning hboot unlock. sorry to say but all x users including myself will be waiting awhile.

Lol you think verizon is the apple of carriers why don't you go try at&t and lose your ability to side load apps... That's really locked down

I think once the Samsung Galaxy phone comes to Verizon you will know if Verizon or the manufacturer is locking the phones down, Samsung has left the bootloader unlocked on the Galaxy line worldwide so far.

That is an excellent point. Now I am eagerly awaiting its' release to see what happens. If in fact it is Verizon calling for the encrypted bootloaders then VZW can count me in for an ETF when a dual core whizbang 2000 that is rootable comes out on Sprint/T-Mobile.

Its the manufacturer that locks down these phones like this not the carrier. Verizon may want their phones locked down but ultimately its on the manufacturer. Motorola locked down this phone they don't want you to root your phone. Now that you know who does this get mad at the right person

Darkseider I am with you, my contract is up by the end of the year and I will be heading to another carrier if Verizon locks the Galaxy down. If it's not locked down Motorola can kiss my ass, if it wasn't for the millions of us buying a Droid and saving their butts they wouldn't be making phones anymore or probably bought by another manufacturer by now. I am really pissed as the Droid X had everything I wanted in a replacement for my Droid, the quality of the Droid even had me forgetting the piece of crap Moto phone I owned in the past...bye Moto..Hello SAMSUNG AND HTC!!

New Guy here.... I am gonna get the phone on the 15th
can someone please link or tell me what all this rooting does nd what is it?
also "Roms" sorry :( im a Blackberry and a Car wiz but ive never
had a droid phone>>> sorry 4 being a Newb

Roms are custom images of the android OS that have "hacks" and various other goodies that verizon don't like us having. Ex. Free wireless tethering..
And the term "root" is similar to how iphones are "jailbroken." Having your phone rooted is the equivalent of having administrative privileges on your computer.

I was reading earlier in this thread that the phone will be rooted and most apps that require root access will run on Droid X and the ROMs are going be the "iffy" subject. Is this what still what most people think after some members have used the device or gotten a look at it?

So true, Motorola was quoted as saying (I am paraphrasing) phones like the Droid are the exception to there rule and that they lock there boot loaders and have been doing this for years

All I can say to that is don't buy Motorola and go with HTC or Samsung so long as the device can be rooted and has an unencrypted boot loader. Vote with your wallet.

huh, weird because HTC is no better. The only reason the Nexus one and the G1 were so hackable is because thats how google wanted it. If HTC had there way every one of there phones would be like the Incredible.
