Far fewer reported instances of boot-looping/fried/damaged phones due to a manual update; and since a lot of those people would have D/L'd the files from here, you'd think we'd be hearing from ALL of them.
It's a major inconvenience factor, but quite often the phones can be fixed via a reinstall of the file from the circus thread, or using a stock SBF; annoyance factor goes up, but most times after that you can still use the phone till the new one arrives.
Easy Tether works and only costs if you buy it. It runs 2.1, 2.2, and other than having to install a program on every computer you want to run it on, it's virtually hassle-free.

Easy Tether will provide instructions. Basically you have to install a small program on the computer(s) you want to tether with it, and a driver, but the Easy Tether people provide links and directions. It might be a bit slow on Vista to get the install done (and I thought a pain in the keister, but you might not mind), but XP worked beautifully when I was using it before I rooted.

Free to try for two weeks (and when I used it you could just uninstall it, reinstall it, and you'd start your trial period all over again), $11 to buy, last I knew. Once purchased you'll never have to pay for it again or pay Verizon for the official tethering option.
Just be a little careful. Excessive use of torrents or other P2P programs may not be looked upon nicely by the VZW staff. Unlimited does mean unlimited for the data plan, but that doesn't mean that Verizon likes it if you are sucking down multiple GB per day.
Some people did, some people didn't, and the update still hasn't finished rolling out. The original deadline was for 11:59PM tonight. Don't worry, though, either you'll get it tonight or you'll get it in the next couple of days. Things didn't go as quickly as they'd hoped.
If you don't get it in the next week and are dead-set against doing the update manually, go to the store and they'll try to help you.
