Should I get my son a Droid Bionic

I'm interested in some opinions of owners. My son is 16. This would be his first smartphone. There are some good deals out there right now for a Bionic and the price is much less than Razr, Rezound or Nexus.

So would you recommend the Bionic now ? Is it holding up well etc.

Thanks.

I wish I could have waited for the Nexus. My reason for that may be different than your case. Mine is mainly the lock bootloader on the bionic. With that said, the Bionic is a great phone overall. Obviously the Nexus will cost more at the time when the nexus is available.

The Bionic is probably the best phone out in the market right now. It is WAY better than the iPhone that everyone and their mom wants. The one reason why I would choose the Bionic of the Razr is that you can pull the battery out and switch it out with an Extended Battery if you wanted too, or if you needed to do a battery pull because your phone freezes from modifying it. (I don't think your son will be rooting it and roming it yet). Also, its a very fast phone and very reliable.

Yeah, I am personally going to get a Nexus (to replace Droid OG) but I don't want to pay $299 for him when I can get a Bionic for <$100
I went from OG Droid to the Bionic. I really love this new phone. There are far more capabilities and not to mention the 4G! So much better! I can't say much for the Nexus, but if you root the Bionic, you can pretty much make it the best phone out there.

I will say that the bionic for $100 will be by far the best bang for your buck. I also don't like the razr for the non-removable battery. I have a battery dock and swap between batteries. I know this one guy that got a razr and I told him why I didn't like the razr. He said "well i can get extra battery power with this thing I ordered". Which turns out to be a battery pack that hangs off his phone with a cable. The nexus has an unlocked bootloader which is only important to some of us that want to mod the firmware in a more extreme manner. Nexus also comes with newest Android OS 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). Bionic will get ICS sometime down the road. Other than that the ram is about the same and the nexus would have slightly better processing speed.

Like wseyller said, there are battery chargers that are "On the go" and it just looks like a thin battery or external portable HD that has a micro usb cable on it that plugs into your phone and charges it. But Honestly, the Bionic has a awesome battery life stock. And once you root it, the battery life and jump through the roof. I have my Bionic rooted and Rom'd with Theory's Rom and just the other day, my battery lasted for over a day and it still had about 10%. (That's really freaken good for a smart phone these days). I was thinking of getting that battery charger with my phone when I got it but I honestly dont need it since I bought the car charger in the "Bundle" that they usually offer you and I also got the HD dock (Better than the standard dock) and its soooo awesome! Webtop app FTW!

That is one thing that the Nexus won't have is the Webtop, whether you go out and buy the lapdock, the hd dock or even use the weptop hack. It is a very cool exclusiveness. Battery life is very good. I have leaked 5.7.893 and theory rom. But I am a very heavy user, so even though I get great battery life I like to swap batteries without the need to stick my phone on a charger.

Get a stable 3G device for a teenager IMO.

What's the rest of his friends have? What does he want to do with his phone? Mod it or just use it?

The Bionic is a fantastic phone. I got it when it just came out from the OG Droid and am VERY happy with it. I don't want to exchange it for any other phone currently on the market. But if you look at all the other threads, we have people complaining about data loss, bad camera and other things. He might be happier with an iPhone.

But regardless of what Smartphone you end up choosing for your son, encourage him to use WiFi. I doubt you grandfathered into the plan with Unlimited Data (Which would be a life saver if you did) and Smartphones can use up data like air. Everything from checking email to going on Facebook uses data. So WiFi is a huge life saver when it comes to Smartphones.

I grandfathered in with Unlimited Data so I'm not limited to 2G, 5G, or 10G's of data. I can use Webtop, Netflix, and Pandora all day :)

OMG WUUUUT. He might be happier with is until he realizes that the Bionic is WAY better. The iPhone doesn't even have 4G. If you're going to get a Smartphone, might as well get a 4G phone that will last a really long time. The iPhone is going to be replaced by another iPhone within the next 2 or 3 years. After a few years, the Bionic will have sooo many different Roms that you can choose from and flash and it will be a brand new phone.

iPhone users always say they have a cool feature like Siri but Android is already developing a software similar to it called Iris. (Slap in the face to Crapple).

I registered to offer my caution to him, so thanks.
