Stuck on 1X? How to get 3G back

Confirmed: Fix does not work in DC

EDIT: I am incorrect. The fix worked in Washington DC area. Specifically Montgomery Country MD. I am on 3G speeds now.

Used the ## Rev A Enable fix here in Washington DC and it did not work. Just confirming for informational purposes.

Still stuck on 1x, wahoo.

it's out in Georgia and all our 4G air cards are bricked.... nothing but an error message ! :icon_evil:

Verizon is sending our business 2 3g cards overnight so we have something on Thursday. Ugh !

does that mean they think this will take a few days to sort out possibly? hmmm... :icon_eek:

Still out in Denver, but the Rev A trick brought me back to 3G. I called Verizon and got credit for today $1 big deal.

Called Verizon and they gave me 10 dollars credit

Verizon devices: 100% 4G is out nationwide. 4G phones will be stuck on 1x because their 3G is actually over the LTE band.

This is not true. 3G does not run on the same band or system as LTE. A 4G outage should not affect 3G and even Engadget still had 3G speeds on there devices.

Then how do you explain no 3G for a lot of us?

3G is CDMA and 4G is LTE and they both run on seperate bands. Its common knowledge.

If you are getting connected via 1X then you are connecting on the same band as 3G. Try the variety of fixes across this forum and the net. If you have a TB then Engadget has a link to the fix for the 3G issue.

As most are aware both the LTE network and eHPRD are down (a special version of 3G for the Thunderbolt only). To get 3G data back you just need to change your settings back to the normal 3G network. Here are the steps:

Dial ##778# and hit send

A pop-up window named EPST will show up giving you 2 choices: View Mode and Edit Mode. Pick: Edit Mode.
Enter the Password: 000000
Go down to Modem Settings and pick “Rev A“
You’ll want to choose enable and click OK, hit the menu button and then press “Commit Modifications.”
Restart your phone and you should see 3G is working

Then you can use either the Phone Info or LTE OnOff app to set the preferred network type to CDMA auto (PRL) to maintain a steady 3G connection, i.e. to keep the phone from cycling through its options and thereby temporarily dropping the connection. And once the LTE network is back online, you can set it back to CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto.

I'm not sure the benefit of eHPRD, so I'm not sure why I'd want to turn it back on ever again.

I did these two steps and got 3G back. Thanks all!

I think someone mentioned this already. Since I don't live in an area with 4G do you think I can activate eHPRD when its back up again and just leave it in CDMA auto (PRL) to maintain it? Then whenever I am in a 4G area I can go back to Phone Info and switch to CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto and connect to 4G...would this work?

last step (may not be required if you get 3G after restart)

dial *#*#4636#*#* then set preferred network type to CDMA auto (PRL) ---will stop phone from looking for LTE signal

I hope this helps anyone that is left in the dark by this outage.

If you are running a non-stock dialer or a rom that included a dialer it may prevent you from entering settings. Flash this zip to go back to stock dialer

For those that want instructions for after LTE is back on

These 2 steps will put you back on LTE and then put you back on the correct 3G for the Thunderbolt, when its back up.

dial *#*#4636#*#* to get LTE, set preferred network type to CDMA + LTE EvDo auto

Thanks a bunch. I'm in North Carolina and its been on 1x most of the day.

Loving my TB
