Typically, task killers cause more problems than they solve. The Android OS was designed to handle multiple tasks so why burden the OS doing something it does very well.

THis is why it does not work. Get a manual task killer and you will notice that as soon as you kill that task another one will pop up, and as you kill another one eventually the tasks you killed will pop back up. So you are burning battery life and performance killing tasks that will pop up. Now task killers are not all bad. their are times when you need to kill a particular task. If that is the case get a task killer where you manually kill off a a task.
I use a task killer if I have an app that needs to be killed, ie vilingo, I know its a battery killer and when im done with it i dont want it running in the background. I see no need to kill off a bunch of tasks. So automatic task killers cause more problems and are not really helping but hurting your performance.

Not to mention that, just because you see an app in ATK's screen, it doesn't mean its using any resources. Want proof? Open your settings and go to manage applications and click running at the top. Alot of what you'll see will read "0.00MB".

Haha!! True! What made me chuckle was that we got a breakdown of what it is and what it "does" in this thread. Sweeeeet!!!! :)

I dunno. I installed automatic task killer and my droid x battery life doubled. Explain that...

When I look at my battery manager things like skype are always taking up a certain % of battery even when I didn't use them all day. Now that I use automatic task killer they don't.

Certain apps will consume power when inactive that's when task killer is useful. But otherwise apps that are in memory are usually useful.

Yeah I am pretty new to droid, but will uinstall automatic task killer and give it a try. It seemed like my battery life was a lot better though. So if skype is running in the background is that bad for battery? I'm not even logged in or anything, but it seems to never go away.

Its most likely just there but not necessarily doing anything. ATK just shows what's open, the Linux system in Android manages them. Always use the back key to get out of applications and not the home key, that helps.

I wonder how do you calculate this? Doubling life from a task managing app seems an extreme exaggeration. How many days and what methods did you use to measure this? And did your kid install a bunch of bloatware before you installed the task manager?
