The "Got my D3"/ first impressions thread

No one appears to have mentioned anything about Google Talk...

Not seeing video chat from Google on it. It has Skype preinstalled however.

Just in case you didn't already know, the app itself is Google Talk or GTalk, and in the application grid it would simply be "Talk." You may have to download it from the Android Market.

Load it up and see if you have the option of using your front facing camera for video chat.

Edit: okay I just looked and noticed that GTalk isn't in the market. Is that normal? I have it on my D1, but that's because I'm running a custom ROM. It just occurred to me that maybe Verizon/Moto have a deal with Skype, and so they removed GTalk from the 2.3.4 build of Gingerbread because of it.

I can send somebody the GTalk apk if necessary.

Brandon

This will send me into a rage if it's true. Moto have no right to entirely remove Google Talk - I use it all the time. I might need that APK from you, Brandon.

I've got a Thunderbolt and have a serious desire to return to a Droid. I have no doubts that the D3 is a worthy successor to the D2, but does anybody's know if Verizon would let me get an early upgrade? I got my Thunderbolt using an upgrade from my grandma's line, and I have one coming in January(a NE2 one, I think).

Anybody? I'm going to call in a bit, but I'd like some peer encouragement/discouragement.

Not to nitpick, but this isn't exactly the right thread for what you're asking.

While i'm really enjoying this phone I find myself wondering when root will be achieved. All the pre-installed apps are annoying. And while on the subject of annoyances, i'm really not liking the pre-installed and locked bookmarks.

i highly doubt gtalk isn't in the market. though i'm not at my phone to check.

edit: wait...gtalk was built into gingerbread

You can check your upgrades on line, or just give Verizon a call. On most lines that have had the phone for at least a year, they will offer you the Droid 3 for $149. You get to keep your old TBolt, so you can sell it online and make up the money. Also, this will restart your two year contract.

I'm curious about this as well....but I don't think I was a fan of the DX2 display.

I was so excited about the D3, but now I'm devastated at the thought it might look like the DX2....

Yes, but are the colors better? The Droid X was washed out...

The screen seems a little washed out compared to my Tbolt, but not enough to irk me. I haven't tried messing with the brightness displays yet.

Okay, when I take it off auto, I can definitely get a more vivid screen by adjusting the brightness. It appears the auto-brightness setting is taking a very conservative approach to your battery.

Wild how display opinions are so varied, due to our subjective views.

Though have not seen the D3 yet, I think the DX2 display is far better than the Tbolt display, as does most media reviews (FWIW which is not much).

Though I praise some folks eagle eyes here, if the D3 is the same display as the DX2, but smaller pixels for the 4"display, I would be happy.

BTW, if a 4" pentile bugs some people, the DX2's 4.3" would be even worse for them.

Been using it all day and haven't noticed any slowdown. Haven't gone out of my way to close or kill anything at all. (I am going to be patient since I know all phones seem uber fast their first day.)

Having an i7 980x at work and i7 2600k at home, I can assure you I am sensitive to hardware performance. ;)

If you're dying for a thorough review by an experienced individual, be patient. It hasn't even been widely available for 24hrs yet!

I'm sitting here basking in my d3 glory, just setting up some of my apps and I booted up my d1 right next to it to check some settings... wow is this d3 screen better... maybe my d1 screen was going bad buts very yellow and dark compared to the d3 (with d1 brightness maxed and d3 brightness less than half)... looking at them side by side it would be painful to go back to the d1 display now... I must have just been used to it, didn't realize it was that bad until I had something to compare it to.

...again, not saying everyone's d1 is that way, maybe the screen was going bad.... but if its not this could help people concerned with the pentile display.

So, if you actually insert an sdcard, it gets mounted as sdcard-ext, and apps that normally talk to a mounted sdcard, do not see it. So you will have to treat it as raw storage for now it looks like.

This is a good thing, since the sd card is not blocked by the battery, it can be hot swapped for media with no concerns for app dependent data on the sd card.

For any apps that have issues installing with this mapping, simply mount the internal storage and the apps will install. Mount before installing, of course.

Out of curiousity(as an owner of D2G), does the new Droid 3 have the CRT screen off animation? It's somewhat signature to 2.3gb lol

Sent from somewhere in a strangereal world.
