The "Got my D3"/ first impressions thread

Here's a better 1080p test for the D3. I think the one he uploaded was converted into standard def (360-480p) when he uploaded it to photobucket. It showed no sign of HD at least. Or maybe it was due to him being in an office.

Loving my OGDroid!
Does it feel like it will feel this good in a couple of years?

Then again that's thanks to the devs too!

Not seeing video chat from Google on it. It has Skype preinstalled however.

Just in case you didn't already know, the app itself is Google Talk or GTalk, and in the application grid it would simply be "Talk." You may have to download it from the Android Market.

Load it up and see if you have the option of using your front facing camera for video chat.

Edit: okay I just looked and noticed that GTalk isn't in the market. Is that normal? I have it on my D1, but that's because I'm running a custom ROM. It just occurred to me that maybe Verizon/Moto have a deal with Skype, and so they removed GTalk from the 2.3.4 build of Gingerbread because of it.

I can send somebody the GTalk apk if necessary.

Brandon

This will send me into a rage if it's true. Moto have no right to entirely remove Google Talk - I use it all the time. I might need that APK from you, Brandon.

That would just be wrong...Android operating system is GOOGLE run...removing and making such a popular Google app would be stupid...if it really is unavailable, don't worry I'm sure Google will MAKE it available one way or the other lol

What's weird is Astro File Manager doesn't show it as an available app to back up and export as a file. Maybe it's because I downloaded a themed version? I just remembered that now. Here is the link to the inverted version from the SS5.4 thread:

http://www.droidforums.net/forum/chevyno1/150739-rom-ss-5-4-gb-2-3-4-5-31-11-a-5.html#post1552688

And here is a link to the regular version (I think) from XDA (looks like this one requires root): [APP][ROOT] Google Talk 1.3 with Video calling, Now wifi optional! - xda-developers

I don't know if there is a file out there that can be installed that doesn't require root. Sorry guys.

is there a 720p option because the 1080p looks really choppy when you move so maybe the 720p has a higher frame rate so it will be smoother.

I agree. The detail and resolution is fine, but when the camera moves the framerate drops considerably. A 720p option for recording would be awesome and lower the file size. I bet the camera takes some good stills though.

D1 here on CM7, same as D3, 2.3.4 GB, no gtalk in market.
It comes with their Gapps.
Chat was working for me earlier but not now. That was supposed to be the big feature with 2.3.4 as I recall.

Keyboard issues? I did not like the D2 keyboard, due to stiff key action and cramp key space. If the D3 is not better or is worse than the D2, the KB will do no good for me. I would mainly be using it for game emulators and the Quake ports, since prefer swype to hard keys for texting now.

Based on the reported bloat and low free ram (hopefull easy to root to fix) a stiff keyboard will force me to wait for the Bionic. Hoping the KB is good, or will just do without one.

Point appearing to be that the keyboard is a critical function for this device. I am hoping the keyboard is not stiff actioned like the D2.

I think the keyboard is the best I've ever seen. The keys are neither loose nor stiff. The tactile feedback is just right. Without the rocker joystick button of previous droids, the keyboard feels huge. The slide action of the keyboard is stiff without feeling stuck and has a nice positive click as it goes into position. Beautiful job of engineering.

You guys are killing me. I need to know if there is any lag with this phone and mire about the screen. Please. Those are the only two things that im concerned with. I have not herd a lot of good things about the so called better screen ( penitile screen ) .

Smooth like butter. Not sure what you mean by mire. I don't think pentile is a positive feature, but mostly because it shows jaggies on really small text.

Sorry I ment more about the screen. I would compare it to a DROIDX that I have now. I would love to wait for the galaxy s2 but it seems that the carriers are being stupid. So who knows when and if they come out. So right now its this phone or the bionic. But I don't have 4g in my area so don't care about a 4g phone that's why im interested in the d3. But how do pics and wallpapers look with the penile screen. My droid x looks ok but the colors look washed out. I need to be able to show off this phone to all of my coworkers that have the iphone 4. They all have it. Now I know its not as good as the iphone screen but is it a step up. Glad to here about some of the people that are saying no lag as of now.

Anybody opposed to taking some outdoor pics using the rear camera? So far I've only seen 1 indoor shot. I feel like the Bionic will have very similar optical lens hardware so I'm curious as to how it performs.

Respectfully not getting the focus on hidef recording as a litmus to get any phone, since like photos, they are functionally limited due to no optical zoom feature. It is a complete contradiction to be concerned about hidef recording and even think about the digital zoom that phones use. It is as absolute an oxymoron as can be conceived.

Thank you for taking the time to create and share that HD video, BenLand150. The clarity of the image is very nice, but damn... I must say that the low frame rate was like strobe light will most likely give at least a few people a serious seizure!
