The Christian Science Monitor has an article about Google Wallet not being on the Nexus. it says, "It's unclear whether the U.S. version will be lacking the chip or whether it will simply be blocked from running the Wallet application"

Does the Verizon version come with the NFC?

Last I heard it does and Verizon was only "asking" to not have it turned on. Root should fix it easy enough.

It has NFC. Just no way to use it at this point, except for Android Beam.

They removed Google Wallet, not the NFC altogether. Yes, there's a hack that can get Google Wallet on the Nexus now.
