The Ultimate Droid 3.0.1 - Multiple Phones

Hey guys..... A bud of mine helped install other ROMs to my Droid X and teach me the basics. My X running 2.3.340...... titanium backup, bootstrap, ClockworkMod, and all that stuff is on there. I have Rubix 1.9.7, and Liberty 1.5 on my SD root. Here are my questions:

1. Where do I download the .zip? Do I need to extract it to my desktop, or just save it
there? In other words (I guess), Does the phone do the extracting when it applies the ROM?
2. Are unzipping and extracting the same thing?
3. Can I just drag the .zip file to my SD root or do I have to do it another way?
4. How do you deodex a Droid X? How dangerous is it? If I am running a different ROM
besides stock, does my phone still need to be deodexed? I have a .zip on my desktop that I downloaded that claims to deodex a
stock ROM. Is that possible? What's the right way to apply it to my phone? And lastly.....
5. What is so different about installing a theme vs. a ROM? Themes are a real pain in the @$$ !!!!!!

I mean, I'm goin' crazy over here! I just got out of a bootloop with Rubix when I tried to apply the Serenity Red theme. I hope this Ultimate Droid is the only.....and last..... ROM I ever need. I just went the website and Registered. If all works out, I will definitely donate as much as possible whenever possible. I know....I know...." oh great, another effin' rookie who wants us to do all the work for him." What can I say? Maybe I'll the one answerin' questions down the road. LOL Thanks for the help. Well I gave this ROM a try and it was terrible. Basically made my phone unusable. Gmail, Facebook, and Yahoo accounts would not sync no matter what I tried. Also, I could not log in to my Yahoo email using the stock app. None of my apps were showing on the market because of the sync issue. The phone was also very laggy.

Oh well, back to 2.5 for me

As someone else above asked, did you do a full wipe of your phone? Not just checking "clear data/cache" in ROM Manager, but actually going through recovery to take care of it? I have some bugs, but they are very minor (to be expected for an OS that probably never will officially come to the OG Droid).

If you didn't do things this way, try it: after putting the ROM zip file on your SD card, go into recovery and select wipe data/factory reset. Next go to the Partitions Menu and select Format Boot and then Format System. After that, go to the Advanced Menu and from there select Clear Dalvik Cache. And because of the OCD in me, I end up doing everything above three times. Then select the zip I want to flash. Sure, this means I have to set up everything on my phone again, but the time it takes saves me tons of headaches with weird bugs like you're describing.

EDIT: Just an FYI...I did all the above mentioned wiping even when going from 3.0 to 3.0.1. I never flash a ROM without doing it. And I have very few bugs and certainly nothing that makes a ROM unusable.

It will take 1 pic and then if I immediately choose to take another, it freezes the phone. I have to pull the battery to reboot.

Yes, full wipe, etc based on the above directions. I always do a full wipe.

Had to uninstall UD 3.01 as I need the camera.

ive read about 10 pages so far and most posts are about bugs? who would want to switch over to UD with all these problems?

Is 3.0.1 out for the DX yet? I'll at least give it a try...

I know this is going to sound like I'm bashing the UD creator, but honestly I'm not I repect the things they do to let us do whatever we want with our phones, especially UD. I have and probably always will use UD.

That being said. I'm using a D1 with the stock kernel that came with UD 3.0.x (have tried both) It worked fine for a week. Then the first bug showed up. I don't normally use the cam corder but I was doing some legal vandalism (authorized) and wanted to video it. The camcorder came up and recorded but did not save the video. Ok I can live with that. Then I went fishing and was taking some pics of the fish I caught. Went into the gallery and they are not there. Awesome. Later that day the phone went absolutely ape ****. It said there were no pictures at all on the SD card. Well thought it may have been the SD card. But sine the phone was going crazy and was basically unuseable. I flashed back to UD 2.5. Everything is working like butter like it always did with 2.5.

Now with again with all that being said. YEs there will be bugs yes it may take some time to fix these bugs. Completely understandable. But comp cache did not ever get fixed completely for Ud 2.5 before 3.0.x was released. I know the creators have to keep coming out with new ROMs to keep up with the competitors but come on. If I knew anything about creating them (which I don't hence the respect I give the creators.) I would focus more on quality than quantity. Yes the other guy will continue to come out with new ROMs that are basically the same but they throw a different version designation number at it and its like throwing a cat to some wild dogs, people go crazy for it. I know this ROM is completely new and am not implying anything.

Basically 2.5 was great but it was never perfected completely. I'm affraid to down load this ROM with the bugs it has then they just get disreguarded, and I'm back to the last version. Seems as though the bugs would start piling up. Like we would have to go back to (for example) 2.5 when we are trying to run 3.2, because 3.1 had this bug, and 3.0 had this bug.

Just my two cents. I'm not ranting I swear. Just concerned.

Again I have great respect for the creators of all the ROMs, Kernels, Themes, and everything else that lets us customize our phone and it greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Also if someone could give me the step-by-step on how to do this. Maybe I am doing it all wrong. I wipe Data, Format Boot & System, Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik Cache, Flash 3.0.1, boot up, reboot into recovery, then flash slayher. Seems to always get stuck on the HTC screen.

Don't flash a slayer kernel unless you know for sure it's comparable with your device. Those are Droid1 kernels.

I don't normally use the cam corder but I was doing some legal vandalism (authorized) and wanted to video it. The camcorder came up and recorded but did not save the video. Ok I can live with that. Then I went fishing and was taking some pics of the fish I caught. Went into the gallery and they are not there. Awesome. Later that day the phone went absolutely ape ****. It said there were no pictures at all on the SD card. Well thought it may have been the SD card. But sine the phone was going crazy and was basically unuseable. I flashed back to UD 2.5. Everything is working like butter like it always did with 2.5.

Now with again with all that being said. YEs there will be bugs yes it may take some time to fix these bugs. Completely understandable. But comp cache did not ever get fixed completely for Ud 2.5 before 3.0.x was released. I know the creators have to keep coming out with new ROMs to keep up with the competitors but come on. If I knew anything about creating them (which I don't hence the respect I give the creators.) I would focus more on quality than quantity. Yes the other guy will continue to come out with new ROMs that are basically the same but they throw a different version designation number at it and its like throwing a cat to some wild dogs, people go crazy for it. I know this ROM is completely new and am not implying anything.

Basically 2.5 was great but it was never perfected completely. I'm affraid to down load this ROM with the bugs it has then they just get disreguarded, and I'm back to the last version. Seems as though the bugs would start piling up. Like we would have to go back to (for example) 2.5 when we are trying to run 3.2, because 3.1 had this bug, and 3.0 had this bug.

Just my two cents. I'm not ranting I swear. Just concerned.

Again I have great respect for the creators of all the ROMs, Kernels, Themes, and everything else that lets us customize our phone and it greatly appreciated.

your pics and videos should still be on the sd card, they just don't show up in the gallery. i had that same problem, but i checked in root explorer and all my pics were there, i think it was under sdcard/dcim/camera

Ive been trying to keep up on 3.0.1 threads with what little free time I have and I thought i'd share my experience a little bit to maybe help some of you with your bug problems based on my own findings.

I had been running 2.5 without a problem on my D1 when 3.0 was released. Just like everyone else I was bored with it and ready to jump into 3.0, which of course I did. I wiped several times and installed...just like everyone seems to be posting, it ran great for awhile then started to have one bug after another. I got tired of it and went back to 2.5 and within a day or so 3.0.1 came out. Installing over 3.0 didnt work...stuck at bootloop...so I wiped and tried with 3.0.1.

Same thing, it ran great but then tanked after awhile, for whatever reason restarting took 5-10 minutes, texts werent coming threw and lag was horrible. Played with setcpu and UD's built in overclocking options but nothing helped so again I was frustrated and went back to 2.5.

Im not one for going from something new to something old so I started reading because honestly I liked the new UD and didnt wanna have to wait for BD to finish his testing to get it as perfect as 2.5 or even close for me to run 3.0.1. So here's a couple suggestions that may help...

1 - Remove the boot animation if your phone takes several minutes to reboot
2 - Theres an app called milestone overclock. Its free and supposed to be able to change voltage and overclock speeds without reflashing. It didnt work for my phone but many people have had succuess with it.
3 - Haptic feedback seemed to help with the 4 soft buttons...least you know if it registered your touch
4 - Try kernals since this build hogs resources from what I read (sorry if im using the wrong terminology). Ive always heard great things about chevy kernals but they dont work with 3.0.1 on my phone so Im running slayers 1gh medium voltage and my phone is running great now. I dont know a whole lot about kernals so maybe a different voltage would work for my phone but what I do know is its basically phone specific so try them all for your own results.
5 - Cutting down widgets helps with lag as well. I know its great having all your screens full but in my opinion performance outweighs having widgets running even when im not using them...just my opinion of course.

Im currently running 3.0.1 without any troubles so far but I also dont use my camera or videos recording for much so my tips might not help with those issues. My guess is in order to run effectiently the stock kernal not being fast enough could be the reason for a lot of bugs such as not recieving texts and sync issues and so on...just like a computer, if you have a slow processor and small amount of ram your not gonna download music, check your mail, listen to pandora and have a game running all at once while you switch between each task...it wont keep up.

Just to clerify im not an expert on roms, dont know how to develop them and probably never will be any kind of expert with the android os.

I've been running UD for awhile now and really think BD has given us many options that most roms dont from what Ive seen. Hes not always punctual and doesnt always get his roms 100% complete but for someone that does this for whatever donations he receives I personally cant complain and appreciate what he offers.

Yeah, I've got the same issue. The pics/videos are there, they just don't show up in the gallery.
